Interesting bit I read in an interview with Sam Witwer (voice of Darth Maul on Clone Wars)
" Well, Vader had all his limbs chopped off and burned, and the whole secret with the Sith is that they’re not like the Jedi. They are not selfless, they are selfish. They want power, they want to get things, and if you die, you can’t get anymore things. You can’t accumulate anything, you can’t have that power, and you can’t take it with you. This concept of becoming one with the Force and giving it all up and having a transcendent quality to your being is not one that they even comprehend. It’s not something they think about or believe in. So it’s all right here and now. Even if you get scarred, cut in half, there’s nothing left of you, you still want to hold onto that. Because once you’re dead, that’s it. So when Vader hears Obi-Wan say, “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine,” Vader has no idea what that means. He does not understand what Obi-Wan is getting at. So that’s the secret here with these guys. It’s why Vader allows himself to live a miserable existence in constant fear of his master, because that is better than the alternative of losing everything. It’s interesting, these guys would rather be miserable. If these types of things had happened to a Jedi, the Jedi would just say, “Well, this is my destiny then. I hope that I gave wisdom and knowledge to the younger generation, and now I am gone. Perhaps, even through my sacrifice, I will continue to give hope, wisdom and knowledge to the younger generation.” Sith don’t look at it that way."
