any discussion of freewill will naturally lend itself to a discussion of morality.
(ie: now that you have this power of "freewill", then how will you use it? for good? for evil?)
where the ability to "use the force" is a metaphor for freewill,
then star wars asks : what "guides" your actions? from where do you derive "morality"?
how will you "use" this 'force'? (etc).
there are three paths presented in the PT: only one is correct.
only one brings balance to the force. (only one leads to immortality).
- the sith are selfish. they care only about themselves. they are not concerned with the Common Good.
they will do whatever they think is necessary to further their OWN agenda.
they do not care about helping "all living things" -- they only care about helping themselves.
they follow the "will of the individual" (NOT the will of the people; nor the will of the force).
this brings imbalance to the force.
- the jedi Order is sworn to uphold the "Will of the People", through democracy.
they are selfless. they define "Good" as the Common Good. (and anything contrary as "Evil").
they allow the "will" of corrupt politicians, to determine their actions -- they take their morality from the senate.
they allow the senate to decide what is"right" and what is "wrong" -- and then, they enact the senate's wishes.
they allow the senate to "guide their actions", even when the senate is
introduced to the audience as "corrupt" -- even when it is ruled by the sith lord..
..therefore, they allow the sith lord to guide their actions.
whether they know it or not. (the sith need only control the Senate, to control the Jedi Order -- to control BOTH sides of the force).
this causes imbalance in the force.
- only Qui-gon preached "follow the will of the force" (NOT the will of corrupt politicians).
where the force is a metaphor for God,
and the ability to "use" the force is a metaphor for (god-given) "freewill"..
..then qui-gon's position is that of religion: he takes his morality from a Higher Power.
he
"remember(s) the Force is with us and tries to do what is best", so to speak:
he is perfectly willing to defy the council, in order to do "the right thing".
he allows the force, ITSELF, to "guide" his actions -- and he is rewarded with immortality.
(like a christian might allow the bible to guide his actions, and be rewarded with immortality).
this brings balance to the force.
a Jedi who uses the force, to enact the will of the force, brings balance to the force.
a Jedi who "uses" the force (against its will), brings IMbalance to the force.and a "Jedi Council" who follows a corrupt Senate into galactic war (when the senate is ruled by a sith lord),
IS using the force against its will. hands down.
the jedi "Order" brought imbalance to the force, by it's very mandate: to follow the senate at all costs.
(the existence of the jedi "Order", prevented the jedi "Knights" from following the will of the force, as quigon preached)
((indeed: when quigon mentioned "will of the force", then Mace rolled his eyes and dismissed him with a wave of his hand -- the Order
exists to enact the "will of the Senate", corrupt as it is -- quigon would NEVER have a seat on this council!)).
--> the Jedi Order fell,
because of this sworn mandate, to enact the will of the senate at all costs.
the Order was taking morality from the popular vote: it allowed corrupt politicians to "guide its actions".
it allowed "petty squabbling bureaucrats" (so called), to provide the definition of "right" and "wrong" -- as a matter of Jedi Policy(!).
they ignored their own instincts (they ignored their own god) and they followed the "Will of the People", instead..
..EVEN when the People were dominated by the Politics of Fear, and ruled by a Sith Lord.
--> they followed the sith lord into a galactic war: they
contributed to the IMbalance of the force.
eventually, the Force responded, in self-defense: it spawned a "chosen one", to bring "balance" to the force:
to wipe out ALL force users who were NOT following the will of the force..
(to wipe out ALL force users who were
contributing to the IMbalance)..
..jedi AND sith, alike.
the chosen one brought an end to the Jedi Order, and its sworn relationship to the corrupt senate;
he killed the younglings in the temple, who were taught to follow the corrupt senate;
and, yes, he even killed the sith lord, who took control of the "state" (and thus, took control of the "church" -- replacing its 'moral authority' with his OWN)*
at the end of the saga, the only force user left is Luke:
Luke is
explicitly taught "let go your conscious self" and "let the force guide your actions":
he follows the will of the force.
--> from this point on, all force users will be taught to follow the will of the force again.
this marks the "Return of the Jedi".

* its not about "good" vs "evil" -- its about "separation of church and state"
