So, I thought I'd share a little bit of how my costume was made. I've been posting here and there, but I'll just condense it all here to make it easier. It's not as much of a tutorial as I would like as I didn't take pictures of the build (forgive!), but at least you can see all the pieces. So here we go!
First, the costume itself:
I put tons of research into this outfit, and various parts follow similarly various sources. A lot of consideration was put into making a costume that would look good on me, not just in general. For example, I have a slim, athletic build like Anakin in Episode II, so I followed his costume for the tabbard width and the trim fit. But for the bottom length of the tunic and the positioning of the obi, I went with the Mace Windu look, which positions everything a bit lower on the waist and reaches closer to the knees. I also made the sleeves of the tunic nice and wide. That gives the tunic set lots of movement while still maintaining a 'fitted' look around the torso.
I think the hard part with many costumes is getting that balance just right. Thank the maker (literally!) that my father is as skilled as he is. The outer robe was more difficult. We couldn't source big enough lengths of fabric to make it properly, so we cheated and made the sleeves separately. He hid it well enough so that nobody would notice though. Best of all, the sleeves and hood are BIG! I can't stand when they are too small or too narrow (forgive my goofy expression; can I help it if I'm not the best looking guy in the world? lol).
And of course my beauties! The Hasbro Kit Fisto lightsaber is a PERFECT match for a generic Old Republic lightsaber. They need to make more clan hilts! The belt is the costume base kit; hopefully I can upgrade it to a real leather one sometime. And the boots were a $30 find at Journey's no less! Real leather and COMFY. So happy!
The color was the hardest part. I knew gray was (sadly) misunderstood in most costuming communities. So, I searched for an eternity until I finally found the most beautiful fabric in a rich taupe. It evokes a warm gray that conveys the browns perfectly, and its undertone is a warm brownish-gray tone itself. Thus, it's both distinctive and generic, fitting into the Jedi ranks while still keeping a unique feel.
Also, it's a thicker, softer fabric than most people use. I wanted to avoid a flimsy look, and this material is substantial enough to flow nicely while keeping a strong shape. And it's so comfortable!
So there it is. If anybody has any questions about any part, I would love to share. You're a great community; I hope I can be helpful!
