I know there were some posts here about Sillk Noil and raw Silk, and a link to a website that seemed pretty popular... and I can't find it! LOL I need info on using silk as a tunic... is it washable? Is Raw Silk and Silk Noil the same thing? My friend wants a nubby texture...and likes the look of the silk noil we saw on thai silks.com... but there's no care instructions... If you wash it,, does it have to be ironed?

If you wash it,, does it have to be ironed? Raw silk noire if that is what you're talking about---it is a deceptive name because the material does have a slightly knobby texture to it (almost reminds me of Qui-Gons tunic)---not exactly sure but I do have 1 tunic, obi & tabbords made out of. It washes beautifully & toss it into the drier & comes out basically wrinkle free. When it does need ironing it's not too bad. When sitting in it, though, it can get wrinkled. The only thing I very very strongly suggest is bind the seams wherever the seams are or they will fray badly. I've found I've had to roll the material slightly then put binding on the material to prevent the fraying. The only other thing I can suggest is with the tabbords to put some kind of smooth lining behind the tabbords that touch the legs because the material can "catch" while walking. I have it on mine & it keeps the tabbords moving properly when I'm walking. I hope that helps, if we're talking about the same fabric.

Raw silk and silk noil are about the same thing. Other types of silk like tussah (the heavier stuff that Ben Kenobi's long tunic was made from in ANH) can be called raw silk, but generally raw silk is silk noil at most places.
Yes, silk noil is washable, IF you pre-wash the fabric BEFORE making the tunic. The washing brings out more of the nubbliness. Treat it like a delicate. Wash it on cold and let it hang dry. Dryers are really tough on silk.
I made a short tunic and a long, floor-length tunic out of silk noil. Both look nice. For the short tunic I lined it with china silk lining, like Obi-Wan's in the movie since the silk noil felt a little light all by itself. But I didn't need any lining for the long tunic with all the extra fabric.
Silk noil makes a nice tunic and it is one of the cheaper types of silk. However, I did not make the tabbards and obi out of it. I used a slightly darker linen for those. The linen hangs better I think since it's a little stiffer and the slightly different color makes the tabbards and obi stand out better in photos. But the linen always has to be ironed. Always wrinkles (though you can put it in the dryer fine). The silk isn't so bad for wrinkles.
I've gotten it at both thaisilks.com and fashionfabricsclub.com. Thaisilks is a little cheaper, but that can vary depending on who might be having a sale. Both are a little slow on delivery, but reliable.

Silk Noile (noil) sometimes called raw silk, is a linen weave silk with a variable nubby texture, usually natural in colour, but can be gotten dyed (costs more, dye runs alot, was separately before cutting either way) It gets softer the more you wash it. I dry it on low, helps to dewrinkle after machine wash. Love this stuff.

I get mine from Goldensilks. I have the chocloate brown, my tabs, sash and tunic is made out of it, ya have to dry clean it and ya don't wash it before cutting it or so I'm told. I have mine lined and you'll have to do that or they cling but it's what anakins ep 2 tunics and Qui-Gons are made out of

Hahaha! I know the feeling. I have a certain amount of space for new fabric and it is quite full. It helps for me to keep on the straight and narrow to keep a list of the things that I want to do with the fabric I already have. There's always something coming up on the list.
But still . . . silk noil is nice. I still like hearing about and looking at fabric.

I figure CVI & DCon will need more tunics.
