No prob, Ze fro, but when I was in school, a geek was a sideshow act that bit the heads off chickens, so the word has some, uh, "other" connotations for me! Keep in mind that Wiki can be re-written, so double-check a real dictionary, too!
Interesting thread!

Jan-Qui I thank you for your reply and I have noticed that there are a lot of ladies, but unlike my geeky self my wife was a prep in high school and thinks that I am rather childish some times. I have allways been a rpg gamer and a wanabe martial artist with a little live action rolplay. I just like to have fun. shes cool but I doubt that she would ever make a costume and join. shes just not that into anything that much. I think Its sweet that there are so many bad A@# female jedi. You're most welcome. Ok My husband thought I acted childish(he did to ) most of my life when he was still alive (if he was still around he'd probably wonder why I like it soooooo much but in the end he would have accepted it & made sure I got to where I needed to be & be taking the pictures) & if you knew my age & I'm sure some people would wonder at me & think I'm completely nuts to be doing what I'm doing. I started costuming late in life, I'm retired. Star Wars & costuming have basically saved my life & have gotten me out of myself. Since you seem to be just starting out in the costume portion of Star Wars, just take things one step at a time & who knows she may eventually learn to like it. If not then you'll just have to bear up with your Jedi patience. There are many costumers here who have only 1 member of the family in costuming & the other is on the sidelines--so to speak---but still very supportative of them. When all is said in done everyone supports each other both here & on the home front. I know my family, when I started looked completely baffled & bewildered by what I was doing. Now they look forward to seeing me in costume & have fun with it ;D. The future is always in motion & a Jedi takes time to have the patience to wait. You like martial arts? I do to but I am not able to do that . I attempted Karate once but my arms couldn't handle it at that time. They were going bad. Now that I've got them fixed, it's tempting to see if my doctor would permit me to try karate again---but possibly not because of all the striking that has to happen & the falls that could occur. I'll have to ask him.

Jan-Qui, karate might be too rough, but there are other, gentler forms of martial arts that might be really good for you. Can anyone with experience recommend a form suitable for those of us of a more "mature" age? I know Qi Gong is based on martial arts but doesn't require falls or striking.

To start I must state that I am a non-confrutationist thus I do not condone or admire any one who starts a fight. I study so that I can be one body and mind so that I may understand the true nature of God. I also study because as a kid I was beat up a lot and I just want to protect my self. thus self defence and speritual oneness are the only reason to study an art form that is deadly.
I would have to say that for you the best form of martial arts would be tai chi. It requiers slow movment coupled with breathing exercises. that combination is designed to focus all of the power that you create on the inhale and channel it throught your body to a focused point. when a master of tai chi strikes his blows are so strong they can break bone. This is good for older people because its not about speed or force but, rather focus and accuracy ( and i would like to add peace ). Its calming and you can go as slow as you want in fact tai chi is not an art that should be practiced at a quick or even normal pace. the way it works is you make one movment on inhale and one movment on exhale no more no less. after you become fluant then when forced and I mean forced to use it you wont even know you did it because to you all you did is breath. when practicing this art focus solely on breathing and let nothing elce exist except your breathing and the movment dont plan out your movments just have "NO MIND". the Idea is that every time you inhale you are absorbing the vast energy of the universe through linked inhale and movment in which you release all of that energy in the exhale movment. ie immagin you are pulling a 20lbs (the weight does not have to be 20 it can be 2 or 100 just imagine the weight because your programming your mind to put more force behind every motion which will help you strike harder with less effert and less muscle) object tword you on inhale and then pushing it away on exhale.and repeat
the movments dont really have to be tai chi movments. they can be from any art form. If you studdied Karate then just pratice simple moves like punches from that using a Tai chi breathing system this will give you accutate strong punches. remember SLOW One other benifit of the Tai Chi principal is that you dont need to go to a do jo or studio you can do it at home by your self and it only costs time. In which a jedi has an abbundance.
As for Qi Gong I dont know enought about it to say one way or the other. when It comes to martial arts the best style is the style you feel comfterable with.
I started when I was 7. My dad trained me in a style that he developed. It is much simular to bruce lee's (a form of wang chung crossed with kick boxing) this was my first form. Now I must say I by no means clame to be any good. I just have studied off and on through my life. my second form was the raw form of wang chung. the third form is ninjitsu and finally tai chi. now I never mastered any of these I just studdied theses forms on my own and added bits and peices from all. for instance wang chung teaches very close quarters hand to hand ie.. one inch punch. the form my dad showed me has kick boxing which showes you the proper way to kick with force. ninjitsu showes you how to trick your apponent and grapple usualy causing them to hurt them self. and finally thi chi which centers your thoughts and breathing giving you that little extra amount of force you hide deep down so you can make each contact count. I would also like to say that each style gives and shows you more then listed here. the best thing you can do is take a little from all and use what EVER works to win. Never start it, Never hold back, and Never give up. The best way to win a fight is to not let it go any longer then two swings (theres and then yours). If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

:)Thank you for that wonderful information. I really wish I could learn ty chi--I think I'm spelling that wrong. But I know it's very slow movements. My prob is I don't have anyone to teach it to me . Studing dvd's can be tricky---I've attempted that but I may attempt it again.

DO you know any other forms of martial arts? If you do just pratice slow start of in a defencive stance and inhail through your nose when you have filled your lungs strike while exhailing but strike slow. here Ill give you a couple of easy positions.
First start by standing with your feet a shoulder width apart with your hands at your sides ( dont let your arms or hands touch your body) now breath in as you rotate your hands so your palms are up and bring your arms up so that your palms a about two inches apart and inline with your chest. now exhail and push 5 lbs of imaginary weight to the floor by rotating your palms so they face down then push slowly but with effart till your hands are at their starting place. and repeat
I would pratice this for about 10 min a day for about a week. then after a week start the next step. remember baby steps one at a time. and remember that martial arts is a circle the begining is the end. If you want I can send you a new step every week untill you understand how your body functions durning martial arts then you can adapt from that to your own style.
My email address is project_siphin@yahoo.com feel free to email me with any questions or requests you may have.
may the force focus and guide each of our lives so that we may be at peace.

Thank you most kindly for your offer. hhhhhmmmmm a step by step---that's about the only way it's going to get learned by me.
It would be appreciated. Is this tai chi or is this some other form of martial arts?
I haven't been on too much recently----much going on here at home.

acalsohei pleases dont take this a a negitive I just thought It would benifit all If we knew why I choose the word GEEK. We welcome you and I thank you for your post. The definitions of nerd and geek are as follows (found at wikipedia) nerd - refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests that are age inappropriate rather than engaging in more social or popular activities. geek - a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, gaming, etc. thus I conclude that I am a geek not because its popular but because I am obsessed with Star Wars, gamiing, electronics, and history. It sadens me that being a nerd is popular. well that makes me either a "geeky nerd' or a 'nerdy geek"...dpeending upon the subject of conversation.

I've been a Geek my entire life, and proud of it! In fact, my license plate officially says BIGGEEK and my wife's says GOTGEEK. I own and operate a technology company (software development), and constantly love to learn new things. I am very into Star Wars, Firefly, Star Trek, really about anything sci-fi. Also very involved with any kind of technology, movies, home theatre, etc. that makes our lives better, while not risking our morality scale.
The things I love most about costuming are all the wonderful skills you can acquire while learning to create a costume or prop. I learned to sew, learned to do some light leather-working, am now learning to resin cast, etc. For me, being a Geek is all about the search for knowledge and understanding. It doesn't even have to be about sci-fi, technology, or intellectual things.
You can be a sports geek, a camping geek, a water geek...just about anything you want. It's just a way of expressing our passion for the things we love and enjoy.
I definitely visit this site very often, at least once per day. I don't always post, but at least look around to see if anything interesting is going on (there usually is). I stay very busy with work and yet I tend to frequent quite a few forums such as this.
My family may not always understand my geekdom, but they respect my passion for the things I do. My kids enjoy it, although it can sometimes be embarrassing for them. My wife, she loves me and usually thinks it's great that I'm so comfortable with myself. She hasn't costumed yet, but I am slowly working on her. We'll see how it turns out.
Long live the G33KS! (and N3RDS, 2!)
