I've been invited to enter a painting competition (which I was in last year) and as 3-D art is allowed (up to 10 CM from the wall) I've decided to make some sabers similar to Anakin's and Obi-Wan's, mount them on the canvas and air-brush on the blades. Simple, but hopefully effective. I'm going to title the piece 'Battle of the Heros'. I'll post a picture once it's done, and keep you all appraised of my progress in the competition

sounds like a stellar idea to me. Perhaps even embedding the hilts half into the canvass? A nice "Lava style" background maybe?
I'd be really interested in seeing the end product.........

Wow, I was just going to suggest the same thing! Like the sabers are emerging from the surface... the canvas should probably be backed with very thin balsa, or something. Sounds awesome Tanzan... definitely keep us posted on you project!

I'd be really interested in seeing the end product......... I really like that idea, although I was originally only planning on mounting the sabers on the canvas, as if they were embedded in it, that would require gluing which would then make the sabers themselves unuseable as individual sabers after the competition (assuming it doesn't sell) I was planning on using nylon zip ties (painted to match) to secure them to the back frame of the canvas. As for the background image, I had planned just a simple starfield (similar to the board's) so as not to detract from the sabers, but I might well consider a Mustafar scene instead, thanks for the suggestion Sounds awesome Tanzan... definitely keep us posted on you project! I certainly will, although the most time consuming part will probably be making the sabers rather than preparing the canvas

I had thought of it as cutting a rectangular slit in the canvas so the hilts could be affixed to the back somehow and look like they were part of the canvas. They should be removable that way and reuseable.

They should be removable that way and reuseable. For it to be really effective like that, the slit in the canvas would have to completely match the shape of the saber, or the illusion wouldn't work, or if the canvas was covered in a mouldable substance and they were pressed in, but that would then create the issue of fixing them in place without damaging the sabers... I think zipties are by far the easiest (and safest) way of accomplishing this project, but I'll be sure to let you all know how it progresses

I'm hoping the finished picture will resemble something like this...

The concept for the concept art looks cool.

Thanks The finished will be more rectangular than square, but it gave me a definite idea of what I'm working too, and I'll also need a picture of Mustafar for when I come to paint it, as I can't really use the screen as reference while I'm painting in another room
