I came across this little film:
ryanw.michaelfrisk.com/ryan-w/clips/staff.mov
Clicking on the link starts the quicktime video on my browser, so be warned if you have a slow connection.
It clearly shows hand techniques for twirling a staff that would apply to a double-bladed lightsaber, like Maul's. Very informative.

That kid is pretty good.
I can do just a little simple twirling, with my Kendo shinai, but not behind my back. I need to practice!

I've seen some other videos by that guy, he definitely knows how to handle his weapons

He is very talented, but I would put many of his techniques in the category of showmanship rather than good fighting style. Most of the time he is only holding the staff with one hand and sometimes he lets go of it and catches it again. That can be very dangerous in a fight because if your opponent hits the staff at the wrong moment, it goes flying off and you are left defenseless. It would be even more dangerous if there was white hot plasma on the end.
I'm not discounting his skill in any way. This is just my observations after fourteen years of martial arts training, including staffs.

I've seen some other videos by that guy, he definitely knows how to handle his weapons Not really, he knows how to make it LOOK like he does, but thats the trick isn't it For instance in the contest entry for him versus Dorkamn, it looked great nt becuase of skill but because of cimematography and shot placement... His second foray into the contest sucked and you coudl really see how he can;t handle staff or sword alike, hes got no phyical momentum and bunches his shoulders. You can do lots of tricks without having skill.

still......tricks look nice.....just think of the baton twirlers at parades. I'm not very experienced with weapons (some MA training with them, some self training) but I always prefer to keep my hands on the weapon and would rather forego the flashy stuff, and let the other guy look good while I finish him off........my rules are "Last man standing wins" not "Flash man standing wins".

Actually, the style of martial arts I practice does twirl the staff a lot for some of the techniques and we keep contact with at least one hand at all times. If you twirl the staff so the tips point at your opponent during each revolution, you can the other person at bay pretty easily. (Sorry, it's hard to describe.)
The is the reason that I wanted a double ended saber.

Just be careful. A staff can whack you and just smart a bit if you muff a move. A saber can end the fight if you muff a move...

If I had a working lightsaber, then I would make sure I had the Jedi reflexes to use one properly. ;D

Wow, I think I'm going to have to try converting a wookiee into a jedi now.

ryan w's fight with dorkman may not have been practical, but as far as lightsabre duels go, it looked very nice. he has quite the talent with cinamatography, and he isnt too bad at coreography. when i first saw his ryan vs dorkman, my jaw dropped, it was pretty darned sweet.
