I was wondering the council's feeling on the plastic lightsabers. My dilemma is this, I am new to costuming and still talking my wife into the accepting the idea that I am not just a Jedi in spirit but that I want to dress the part also. I think I have her talked into the costume but spending $$$ on a saber also might drive her to the dark side. (bad joke) Is it acceptable to use the plastic until I can afford to make my own?

Absolutely...
I only have my home-made saber ...which is made of metal...but does not light up....and a ton of Hasbro plastic sabers....
I also have a Park's Saber...but it is also non-working and I bought it a long time ago. Very few of our members have the ones that actually light up....
Personally...I think more of any Jedi who makes their own....and as Jedi folklore demands....the last step of becoming a Jedi is the construction of your lightsaber...and ours don't have to actually work....lol...
Check out some of the threads under the lightsaber forum...it has plenty of links to places that have information to make your own.....lots of the lightsaber plans call for common stuff you can find at the hardware store...and most of them come out looking really good!

Thank you for the input. Wasn't ssure if I'd be ostracized lol( I know I wouldn't) for using the Hasbro plastic. The parksabers are awesome, I've seen his work. Most impressive ;D

jedi firefighter, if you 're starpped for cash, might i suggest pvc pipe, i made light sabers, for under thirty dollars. but my next evolutionary step in saber hilts will be chrome plumbing pipes, and various add ons, i use a 5/8 inch wooden dowel for my blade, in the pic in the second costume thread, the lighted saber, is one of my pvc sabers, i added the dowell which is 4 feet long, but for the assembly of the assembly i will have a plastic bladed for it, (is pvc pipe acceptable for a saber blade, this part is for the council)

Thank you Master Aldan, I have seen the yellow box sabers and I think that is what I will do. #8 seems to be my fav. and I think I will be able to personalize it quite well.

Sounds good to me too. I didn't even have a saber hilt until a friend said she was making one for me. We all start out with whatever we can find to use/make a Jedi costume with, until we have the $$$ or knowhow to make/buy better. ;D

I like that third saber you made. Is that a Big Yellow Box saber?

No, it's my own design, but I did get some inspiration for the grip from the BYB site.
