First, let me say that I know nothing about dyeing or finishing leather! I have a set of leather belt pouches, that look terrific, but the dye seems to rubbing off. I've got a stained set of tabbards and obi to show for it. Is there something, and what is it, that I can use to either seal in the dye or clean off the excess dye? I can make new tabbards, but don't want the same staining to occur! Any suggestions appreciated...

THANK YOU! I'll try that! There's a Tandy not too far from here...

Yes, that's what I use. After you put on a coat (and it's dry of course), you might want to test with a damp cloth to see if any of the color is still rubbing off. That's what I do, to be sure the finish is applied thoroughly and the dye won't bleed through. I use two coats for my pouches, but you may already have some sort of finish on yours. Using too much will make them stiff at first.

I didn't even know there was a store nearby until I looked it up after clicking that link... wow, does that place smell good... LOL

Yes it does! And then you'll decide that maybe you'd like to try to make something.... and then you'll pick up a few tools.... and a pouch kit.... you know how this goes... once you start down the dark costuming lightsaber Tandy path, forever will it dominate your destiny.....I started with just the Sam Browne rivets for my first belt (having cannabilized two ready made), and that was all I was going to do.... now 18 months later I've made several pouches, a second belt, and I just designed and finished a new pouch to accomodate my camera and "burned" my Jedi name Jacobi on it in Aurebesh (OK, probably un-Jedi-like, but I thought it looked kind of cool... ) Tandy really is a fun place.

Yes, I see a new belt and pouches in my (distant) future... if I could just figure out for what to use that diamondback rattlesnake skin I saw... LOL

Hendel D'bu and I used oiled leather that didn't need dying, but used some dye just on the edges. I forget what the brand was - Hendel has it at her house - but the excess wiped off nicely, and it dried clean.
The oiled leather is so pliable and nice to work with. Here's a pic of what we did:

Ooooh, that is nice looking leather... did you use a pattern for the pouches or just make them up? They look great... my pouches are so stiff they're uncomfortable... and hard to snap... I was thinking of making some softer ones. I haven't done any leather work since the Girl Scouts...lol

I also use Tandy's all in one dye that doesn't need a finisher. It doesn't rub off on clothing.

Yes, our pouches turned out simply awesome! I love them, and they are fully functional.
I think the oiled leather is the way to go - it is flexible and easy to work with. We had sooooo much fun with this project. I wish I had occassion to make more!
The dye is called Lincoln Quality (Brown) Sole and Heel Edge Dressing. It comes in a 3-1/2 oz. glass bottle. We got it from the kind cobbler that helped us with our (incredible) utility belts. This 'dressing' not only dyes the edges of the leather, but adds a little bit of sheen to the leather for a burnished look to the edge. You could use it all over the leather, I'm sure. It is pretty dark, which I happen to like.
hope that helps! ~Hendel :-)

Thought I'd add my belt pic, just for fun, too :-) (the pouch by itself is the one that goes over the buckle at the back)

Do you all dye the inside of the leather, too? The rough side?
