I'm looking for the spacing from one pair of studs to the next pair on the button studs that hold the the smaller belt on.

I think it depends on how big the belt is.
For a standard belt (30-36 inches), I put the first set of studs four inches from the centerpoint of the buckle and the next set four inches from that.
For a larger belt, I make the studs five inches apart.
Other people may use different measurements, but this one works for me.

I usually set the first pair 5 inches from center, and the next pair 9 to 13 from center depending on the belt size
