I got my belt supplies today and found how remarkably fun and easy making a belt is... I had since dyed the outer belt on the inside so one cannot see the raw leather color - I didn't dye the inside of the big belt since no one would see it...

Nice job, but I don't understand why you dyed the inside. Who's gonna see it? And now you risk getting the dye on your costume, if you don't put some finish on the inside. I can't tell if you put any finish on the outside of the belt either.
And wow, you sure went crazy on the snaps in the back!

Well, I've dyed the smaller inner belt front and back but not the wide belt. However my black belt's peices are dyed front AND back. The professional belt maker probably stained and coated with a finish on the reverse side(near the body). It looks awesome and has withstood 5 years of constant wear, being wet from frequent Floridian downpours.
Personally it doesn't matter if all of the belt peices are dyed on the backs or not, it looks great either way.
As to lots of snaps. it normally takes two to secure the belt in place. It's always good to have an excess for inward or outward exspansion. I usually have more then I need incase someone bigger wants to use my belt they can.
To remove dye off the obi is pretty easy. hand washing it and air drying will take care of it.
All in all, how each person constructs a prop is personal, and no one way is wrong. It only adds to the personality and charactor of the item. I'm sure no jedi's belt is identical in the Order just as their clothing and lightsabres are also individual.
Lazlo, keep up the good work.:-)
My next belt won't use snaps for securing. From what I'd read in the Jedi Apprentice books of how the clothing and belts function. The leather is wrapped in such a way to use tension to keep the belt on. A fun challenge.:-D

And wow, you sure went crazy on the snaps in the back! I only dyed the inner part of the small belt not the big one - you could see a spot or two of raw leather on the buckle. So I decided to do that... The main belt I didn't dye... so no dye worries!
