from what I've seen and read the answer is "Yes" to all of the above. Some buy. Some make from scratch. Some Add on to a store bought belt. Some do one or more of the above together.

Yep, he's right. It's not a requirement that you make your own belt just that you have one. And I'm not even sure that you absolutely have to have one to become a member here.
You need to have something that you hang your lightsaber on and put your pouches and food capsules on, right?

Yes, a belt is required to be a member, but how you go about aquiring it is up to you.

I just finished making my 2nd. Jedi belt. I purchased everything I needed from from the local Tandy leather shop. My total cost was $56.00. You can purchase a very good quality belt on line but I like knowing my belt is exactly the way I want it.

I also, like many others here, like making my own belts, I'm on my third one by now.
I like to be able to choose exactly what color dyes to use (I'm into two-toned belts now, with the smaller accent belt a lighter color). I also like putting in more rivets to "beef up" my accent belt so it's strong enough to actually attach things too and hang things from it.
I'm also not really into the keeper thing, so I just let the rivets on either side of the buckle show, and put a pouch at the back where the 2 ends of the belt come together.
Here's my lastest belt:

Yep. Tandy is tthe way togo if you can get to one near you and cna handle the leather before buying. Some use snaps, some use velcro to hold it closed. I wrap it in sucha way that it's the tension of the leather bands keeping it on. Well the buckle in front is making sure it doesn't go south any time soon. The wide belt goes through a large belt keeper simialr to the one you see on the backs of the jedi's belts in the mvoies. The narrow belt band also passes through that and buckles in the front. I can tighten or loosen it by fiddling with the leather strips I have holding the buckle on. The tinier belt keepers keep the those from moving too much. I know this probably makes no sense and a picture would help . But I hadn't a site to host pics yet.

I unfortunately had to add the cost of a 100 mile voyage to go to Tandy and pick out the leather. But all in all it was worth it.
