I know the standard color is brown, as to match the belt, but I ask because I have found some hardshell camera cases that are silver and I'm just wondering if I need to motivate myself to paint them.

Hmmmm, I'd consider painting them to keep them from standing out. Are the metal? But you don't have to paint them right away. Can you try them on a belt with a costume to see how they look?

Its entirely up to you. They wouldnt be very hard to paint if they are hardshell, and imo it looks far better if the pouches match the belt, but then again I havent seen many that dont, and especially not silver ones. It might look pretty cool.

not yet. We're going through inventory at work so it's been long days and weekends for the past few weeks. But soon (next weekend?) I should have at least one painted and photographed.

It's my opinion that the only thing that matters is that all of your colors blend well as a whole costume. I dress in the traditional Jedi style but non traditional colors. My tunic, under and obi are the common Obi Wan muslin tannish white. My pants are (i have two) rust or olive green. My belt is black with black pouches, a black communicator and multi colored food capsules. My boots are brown. This color scheme may sound a little randy but it looks great together. Don't be afraid to be daring.
