Ok, this won't help one bit, but it's my $0.02. Do what is comfortable. If you can try out a few sizes, go fir it. I can measure my Parks blde and tell you. But if you want what is used on the screen, shoot, I have no idea. I'll post the length tonight.

measurements on all my El blades comes to between 40 and 42 inches, the actual length depending on how much goes into the hilt.

Well I just trimmed them all down, I'm not sure of the length but they look and feel right. I've got 10 of them for an emense battle scene where Mickey Mouse Battles his evil robot twins. It's gonna be SWEET!
Please take a gander at my website.

IN the movies they are 3 feet, 36" from emitter to tip.

Both my sabers have 34" blades. I saw many of the manufactured blades were 40" and it looked as though 4" entered the hilt, giving you 36" of usable blade.
Anything goes. My sabers have "blade length" controls to adjust the length in different environments, like fighting in an escape pod for example... you wouldn't want to poke a hole in the side of it, would you? (Yeah, corny example, but I hope it gets the point across)

Mine is 38", but it fits right into the hilt which is about 8 inches. It would have been 40", but there was a crack in the bottom, so my friend cut the cracked part off. It's long enough for me so it doesn't hit the ground when I swing it.

As a maker of swords and other medieval party favors, I was taught that unless it was a bastard sword, great sword (claymor) or a shortsword, the length of the blade from the guard to the tip should be 1/2 inch shorter than the length from your hand to the ground/floor when you are standing relaxed, so as to allow a clearance during a full swing. I would think this applies to lightsaber blades aswell especially when all lightsabers are custom made. All my prop blades follow this rule and I have no problem using them in katas.

Well except when you look at teh movies they all had 36" all sizes, Ewan and Samuel L both had the same length and theres atleast a foot difference.
You can use whats comfortable but 36" of blade isn't bad for any height at all.

I always guessed the ones in the movies to be 3'. The ones on the market always seemed to long to me (who is short anyways). Can you trim down an EL blade?

I was taught that unless it was a jerk sword, great sword (claymor) or a shortsword, the length of the blade from the guard to the tip should be 1/2 inch shorter than the length from your hand to the ground/floor when you are standing relaxed, so as to allow a clearance during a full swing. This is correct. One of my Karate instructors has dabbled in swordsmanship and I learned this from him. I also agree that EL blades are too long, I'm sure you can cut the polycarbonate tube, but the problem would be how to shorten the electronics (the el paper and the wiring). Probably the best way would be to just special order it... that is, when you go to purchase one, specify the length so that the electronics can be made to fit the shorter tube.

(Hello, ladies and Sith, for it is my first post on this forum!)
My saber has a meter long blade. I think I read they should be since it was said somewhere 'round the net, but that's not the point.
I've been wondering how long are Maul's blades. Any knowledge? (Centimeters or inches)

Each of Darth Maul's blades is somewhat shorter than a standard blade. I think they're about 2 to 2.5 feet each. Then the handle is somewhere between 1.5 and 2 feet.
