O-rings are a cheap and easy way to add grips. Use clear epoxy on them (just a little) so they won't move around on you.
I have also used a rubber shelf liner that I was able to cut to fit. I found it at a local hardware store. I was black and had small "ridges" in it to give it a nice feel. I glued that on as well. I also had a hilt that I could squeeze it in to fit, too. You can see my pics on my member profile. (Yeah, I know it's hard to see.)

yay for o-rings! On my sabre, I have enough o-rings that they extend for about 5 inches from the endcap to another pipe fitting around the centre of the handle. I don't need to worry about them sliding around because they can't stretch enough to get over either fitting. I'll try and see if my buddy will lend my his digital camera tomorrow.
