being a rather stately guy, and having equally stately 21" calves, good knee length boots are hard to find. but as of late, i had an idea.
of course we are all familiar with the original ben konobi in ANH...and his floor length jedi attire.... but before i get into that i must digress..
i've worked as a sexton in my local catholic church for 12 years(i have the most senority in the parish) and as in my duties as head server, its my job to clad my floor length white robe for the weekends, so i have a good and great deal experience with wearing them, and what i can wear under them. (can anyone say black slipknot t shirt..) that in mind..
could i get away with a midcalf boot under a older ben konobi-style floor length jedi robe? or is the 17" tall boot a must even under a floor length robe?

My best guess would be that the requirement/recommendation of seventeen inch tall boots only applies if the entire boot will be visible. At least it makes common sense to me.

the requirements for boots are in the Jedi Code, on our main website: www.thejediassembly.com/jedicode.php?art=vThis is what it says: 4. All Jedi must have a Lightsaber, utility belt, and boots. Robes and capes are optional. Robes and capes that are the color black will not be accepted, unless one is recreating the above mentioned "dark colored" Jedi costumes. T-shirts worn under the tunic may not be visible, and should not take the place of an appropriately styled undertunic. Boots must be mid-calf length or higher, and cannot be a commercial "work" style boot. So yes, a mid-calf length boot is acceptable. No ankle boots, though, and no work boots. Lace-up style medieval boots aren't considered Jedi either. Our suggestion to those who are having trouble finding boots, is to consider getting tops made for a pair of low boots. But mid-calf length will do as well.

Two of the Jedi masters who confronted Palpatine with Mace Windu in ROTS, Agen Kolar and Seasee Tiin, were wearing floor-length tunics. They might be a good place to start for your costume. Tiin has very long tabbards over his tunic, but Kolar has a stole over his, like Obi-Wan in ANH.

That's a great looking costume, Den! Are your boots the ones from the "By the Sword" catalog?

leda....i no longer have these boots...they were among the casualties of Katrina floods...but they were bought from "museum replicas" All in all...i dont recommend them...the heels were already falling off after wearing them only three or four times. (i acutally sent one pair back to them for that reason...then the replacement pair did the same thing)

since I'm revamping my costume I'm also going to modify my boots. what is the movie cannon height as compared to your calf? 2 inches from kneecap? 3?

i think the connon length is an overall 17"from tread to top Wouldn't the height of the boot depend on the height of the actor, and be be relative rather than absolute? I think Drago's question is valid, but I'm not sure of the answer.

"mid-calf" will be different for different heights. from my hunting around it seems that 15"-17" boots are the norm............

It seems to me that most of the "canon" styles are much taller than mid-calf. If you look in the photos, most of the main characters' boots seem to come to about 3 or 4 fingers' width below the kneecap. I'm guessing that "mid-calf" is a gracious accommodation for those of us who need to buy ready-made rather than custom-made. I have a nice pair of equestrian-style "fashion boots" from Etienne Aigner and they are not as tall as I'd like but are much taller than most I've seen. Being tall, I'd love taller boots, but you know, being Jedi and "sworn to poverty" and all, I have to watch my credits... One tip, though, for buying ready-made if you have trouble with "fit" as I do ... along with being tall for a girl I also have wide calves, and I found it better for "fit" to buy "expensive" boots (they were about $200 retail) at a really good half-price sale (Christmas, end of season, etc.) than buy less expensive boots. The cheaper ones (even of similar styles) just seem tighter and shorter and those problems are compounded by having to stuff trouser legs into them. This is my Halloween from 2005 that started this whole costuming addiction, but you can "almost" see my boots.
