After much time and looking, I finally found a pair of boots that I could modify and put straps on. These are the two pairs of best boots that I have now.
I got the boots on the left on ebay a long time ago. I didn't want to do anything to them because they look almost exactly like Adi Gallia's boots. The ones on the left were modified.
I made strap and loop patterns out of newsprint and tried those out on the boots to see what they would look like. I used 5-7 oz leather from Tandy (a shoulder piece, reasonably priced and not too big). I cut and trimmed the the straps and loops (also punched the holes in the loops) and then dyed them.
The loops are attached with linen cord. I measured exactly where I wanted the loops and then put masking tape on those places on the boots and marked where I would punch the holes in the boots with a mallet and an awl. I did NOT want to get that placement wrong and they came out fine. Remember, measure twice, cut once.
Each loop only need only four holes (in a square that matches the square sets of holes on the loops) punched in the boot to attach them. But with two boots, four loops on a each of two sides of each boot, four holes per loop....that's a lot of holes.
The straps go through the loops and are held together with velcro. I had to take the straps off and touch up the color of the straps and loops after I first put them on, but they worked out.
I was working on them while I was visiting my aunt and she asked why I was putting the straps on and I said because that's what they had in the movies! She understood that.
