was just thinking about the cantina scene in ANH when Luke is confronted by Mr. Ugly and friend.... He's being threatened by a killer in a bar full of unsavories and he barely seems to care.
either he felt awefully secure with Ol' Ben around or was experienceing the beginnings of a death wish over the murders of his aunt and uncle.

That's why he lives through it. He acts as if he doesn't care. If he showed fear, no more Luke!

Luke grew up on Tatooine. Sure, he mostly lived out on the farm, but between the Sand People and the Jawas there would be plenty of rough characters around while he was growing up.

both true observations, but up to that point in the movie we have only seen a somewhat snivelling late teen who is a dreamer.

I don't think that you see enough of Luke in the beginning to say he's "snivelling". Sure he can't take a fully-armed, berserker Tusken Raider, but who can? 26 people in a 30-person posse died trying to rescue his grandmother from the Sandpeople. And his performance in the rest of the movie proved his worth.
Dreamer? Hah! That part was essential! He never would have gone with Obi-Wan at all if he hadn't been a dreamer. The only reason why Han and Chewie went was because Obi-Wan was paying them.

Many people start oout with certian things as 'Dreamers'. I myself had been one. Now not like star wars or anything but with joining the Navy. I had always wanted to join sense I was a small child and I dreamed about it on a daily basis. It finially happened for me.
Now I look at this scene and it reminds me of certian RL things. The unpopular child and the bully. Showing fear is something those types want. I agree, had Luke showed fear he would have been worse off. And young Anakin had fear where as Luke didn't.
