A lady at Ben Franklin's recommended some fabric to me for a summer robe that I could find at JoAnn's. I'm 85% sure she told me wool suiting, but it may well have been wool sailing. Can anyone recommend this or steer me away? (I will have no problem finding it in brown, and 100% wool or melton wool is out of the question.)

The lady must have meant "wool suiting". That's a fabric. When I search for "wool sailing" on Yahoo, I just get hits on pages for sailor fashions.
100% wool suiting would be pricey and probably dry clean only. Go by color, texture and feel when you look. There are some very nice blends out there that look quite natural. I've seen some wonderful wool/silk blends, but my guess is that they are just as expensive as the 100% wool; and I don't know how washable they'd be.
Oh, and when shopping, check out the sale bin in the back of the store. Sometimes you can get lucky with a good find.

Wools generally go on sale about now, there's a nice web site posted around here somewhere, I'll try & find it 2morrow, I got to go bowling about now. That would be wool suiting, but might not be the best idea. Not that much cheaper than the other & would need Dry Cleaning.

I don't know that it would need Dry cleaning. I've washed every single wool fabric I've bought for the past 5 years. As long as you buy some extra to allow for shrinking and you PRE-wash before cutting, wool can normally be washed. I do so in the machine, cold water and gentle dryer setting. It you really WANT to felt it, use hot and hot!
My robe is a lightweight wool gabardine, which IS or is similar to wool suiting. I wash it constantly.

My bad.....you don't need dry cleaning if you pre-wash before cutting and sewing. Maybe more than once just to be sure. But, yes, absolutely a hot wash or dry willl transform those wool fibers to felt pronto. Wool still needs to be given a little special treatment.

Kai, where's that fabric site that sometimes has the wool sales? You usually post it I think. I've been known to wash alot of things that they say you can't, but I usually won't reccomend that to others, they sometimes get upset with the results.

I took a chance and washed the tan fabric I'd found before I knew it was wool.<Surprised look> I was really suprised it had not only survived, but didn't shrink, ball up or the worst, fall apart. I washed it in cold, on delicaite setting, then in the dryer on FLuff setting. Cool air.

My robe is wool, I agree I would wash it, if it ever needed washing that is, I rarely wear it and if I do only for short periods of time. I think, since it isn't against the skin I may never wash it, might not be an issue, may look kind of cool to get some age to it.......I like wool and it does all that a robe should do, like hang right, drape and flow like it should, but darn is it hot, over all the other layers of clothing a Jedi wears........sheesh. I used a medium weight wool, high grade and all, it breaths well.........just too many layers I guess.

Hey.......great job on finding the Irish linen........and awesome prices too. Linen has such a great texture for Jedi clothes and along with raw silk one of the best. I can use the linen for many other periods I reenact as well.........I just made a new tunic, tabard and obi out of linen and I can assure you I paid more than this stuff. I wish I had known earlier. Good job!

Kyrel, Dhrama trading company has the cheapest prices on Raw Silk I'd seen.(Silk Noile' they call it). It's the absolut cheapest by the bolt if you goin with another person who wants to make costumes. Their dyes are great too.:-D

Thanks for the tip......I really prefer raw silk, only problem with it though is when you layer it, as in a Jedi costume the fabrics resist each other and crumple up. Am I wrong though in recognizing raw silk as Mace Windus tunic, tabard and obi in AOTC? It sure looked like it to me. I know they used if for Yodas in ESB.

I would choose linen as my second choice for Maces clothes, I agree that linen moves better against itself but the problem I have is with the weave. Raw silk is usually woven in this manner but linen usually has a tighter weave. I could be wrong though because I have seen some blends that are linen looking but have a courser weave. Has anyone ever seen official word on the fabric? I have sort of a selfish interest since I think it would be an awesome fabric to make a tabard and obi out of it. I have searched all our fabric stores including the one with all the natural fiber fabrics and no luck. Actually, not even close to tell the truth.
