Had a problem Trick or Treating last night. People kept walking on my robe. How do you get by this ina crowded area like I expect C3 to be? Should I shorten it justa tad? It does reach the ground almost, maybe 1/4 inch off the ground.

Well, I am not one for sewing, but that's what I would do. Mine almost touches the bottom of my boots. If you don't want to fix it, you can always get a heavy saber and club anyone who steps on it. ;D

You may want too .... I got mine caught on the escalator at CII ... Had a nice rip in the hem ... Bring a sewing kit with you, just in case

That's a bummer becaus my new robe that I just made is way long! I'm wearing it to Chiller Con tomorrow and I have the feeling that It's going to get stepped on. I really like the length though, I like when it sweeps the ground. I don't want to hem it. Hmph... I want my cake but I want to eat it too!

One thing that I noticed about the robes was that even when they didn't touch the ground, they still looked very good. Shan, who I met at Dragon Con, had a robe that was done in the no-shoulder-seam style and her robe came to just about the tops of the heels of her boots. The robe still flowed very well, but she didn't have the problem of tripping over it.
Two things I learned at Dragon Con:
1) The robe is a HEAVY garment, so if you're planning on wearing it all day, make sure you bring some Icy Hot with you afterward, because your shoulders are going to be sore.
2) Walking up stairs in a robe is difficult. I can't tell you how many times I tripped on that blasted thing before I finally figured out that you really have to pick it up to walk up stairs!
I was so excited to get to wear my Jedi costume the first day and was so happy to show it off to the other Jedi I met (you know who you are.) But after seven hours--and me having never worn a costume to a convention before--when I got back to the room, I absolutely wanted to die.
Uh, so yeah, to answer your question, Cor-Al, I would definitely shorten it so that it is about 1/4 of an inch or so above the ground. You still get a very good, full look to the robe, but you don't trip all over it! ;D

What VekEldar said. As long as the robe is made with enough fabric to be otherwise voluminous, shortening it a few inches should do the trick. Mine comes to just about my ankles and I don't remember having a problem getting stepped on.
Even in the SCA, where nearly everyone has garb trailing on the floor, we still forget to walk a few paces behind and step on each other! So, no wonder the non-costumed folk at Con aren't aware.

Mine is a bit shorter in the front & just off the floor in the back. Look at the hem of Mace's in the scene where he confronts Dooku on Geonosis, you'll see what I mean. Much easier on stairs & very practical.

Leda, from having looked at you new robe all day, shortening it would be better and it will still look good. It looks a bit too big right now. You could always tack it up and test drive it first before you cut it for good.
