Okay, I have a question... I know that black costumes are not allowed (and this has been discussed in another thread), and it looks like earthen colors are promoted. But I have a problem. I can't wear brown. Nor gold, tan, or orange. I can get away with beige and off-white...but just barely. Don't know if you know abot the 'seasons', but I'm a Winter. I look awful in brown; all pale and washed-out. I don't want anyone to ask why I'm so pale! My question is, is gray allowed? One more thing; do the costumes really have to be canon? I've already started a costume, but it's completely original. Not based on any other costume at all. I apologize for being a bother. MTFBWY!

This was brought up in another thread, entitled "Gray". What it said was that completely gray costumes weren't allowed, but if you submit a photo of the type of gray fabric you were using, the Council would consider it. I think gray is allowed, but to a certain extent. I think a costume with some gray in it would look good.
The rules on costuming are provided on the main website. I don't think you need a completely canon costume to join. It depends on what the costume you were making looks like.
Since I'm not on the Council, I don't know if I'm allowed to post any help for others. If so, I'm sorry, and this post can be deleted.

Hi and welcome! Here's what I do if I have to wear a color that doesn't suit me, like pale yellow (Cub Scout Leader uniform for ladies ) or lipstick red--- I wear another color between the awful one and my face. You might try a black, gray or maybe even a dark midnight blue undertunic... a color that will look nice against your skin, then choose a fabric that will compliment that color. A khaki tunic might work for you, like a tan, but with blue undertones. Contrasting tabbards, perhaps. The question of gray has been popping up alot lately, and the answer unfortunately is not black and white The answer would depend on what shade of gray you use and whether or not it dominates the costume. Gray can mean anything from pale to nearly black, and there are warm grays and cool grays.... you get the picture. If you have a fabric in mind, send us a well lit pic of the swatch and what it will be used for. A concept drawing would be helpful also. And yes we do accept non-canon costumes, but it needs to look like a Jedi costume. For example: if the lightsaber is the only way we can tell it's a Jedi, then it wouldn't be accepted. Here's what it says about that in the costume requirements: 3. Canon costumes must be an accurate representation of Jedi costumes found in the following sources: movie screenplays, any of the six Star Wars films (including those from deleted scenes on DVD releases), movie novelizations, Clone Wars cartoon series, and any Jedi costumes from the upcoming (Post 2006) Stars Wars cartoons or television series.4. Non-canon costumes include any costume that is not an accurate representation as described above (i.e., a completely original Jedi costume), or a Jedi costume from adaptations, unofficial items or concept art. In particular, the Expanded Universe is not considered canon. However, if a situation requires canon-only costumes, event organizers will be asked if Expanded Universe costumes are acceptable. What will your costume look like?

Leda's suggestion about wearing what looks best closest to your face. You say you can wear beige and off-white. Thus, you should have no problem with the basic Jedi costume of tunics and tabbards. Beige and off-white are fine for them.
The problem would be the standard brown robe. A robe is not required for TJA membership. An alternative would be a beige robe, such as Yoda wears. It's not standard, but it's not black and it's not grey, so it might work.

Well, how are Kahki colors? Yes the council will and does work with folks. That's what we'er here for. I wanna help YOU get the best looking, feeling rocking you can, so you'er proud of it. There is great creativity in the costuming 'code'. Yoda's tan/cream robe will work. I've seen members with robes a very light color, it doesn't even need to be sleeved.

To be honest with you....Jedi costumes do little to flatter the female anatomy anyway..... so...it goes without saying that when we wear our Jedi garb it isn't because we are going out to look "smashing"..... or taking a trip down the fashion runway....our goal is to dress as the great majority of Jedi that are seen in the films...
unless the skin on your face falls off when in close proximity to brown and tan... yes...you can indeed wear brown and tan..... it might not be your best color.....but I doubt that it would cause serious damage...
;D

I'd see how you'd look in the brownish-greyish colour of Adi Gallia's tunic and tabbard from EPI

I'm almost certain Master Yoda at one time said, "vanity does not a Jedi seek"

Browns may not be ideal for winters, but there should be a few shades that are acceptable. Jedi-wear is more practical than fashionable anyway. I have my copy of "Color Me Beautiful" open and it's true, there no brown shades at all for winter. But I'm convinced that there are always exceptions to the four seasons rule that still look fine. And really and truly, you couldn't possibly look any paler that me!

*blushes* I geuss I made a mountian out a molehill. Sorry! In answering Leda Em-Borr, my costume at this point is about half-finished. The boots (weathered and black but knee-length) and trousers (khaki cargos w/the outer pockets cut off) were bought at a thrift store. I've finished the tabards and sash; both are a sort-of in-between gray and brown color that's acceptable for a place fairly close to my face. I don't know what material they were, but I'm pretty sure they're not synthetic. I made my belt myself out of two belts, one thick and one thin, and it looks fair...bit I think I'll have to start over with it because it's a little too tight. My tunic is cut from a Simplicity pattern for a similar, Jedi-like costume. The fabric isn't that crinkly stuff from the movies (Indian cotton or something like that?) but off-white-to-beige and what looks like linen. Probably sounds pretty wierd...but I liad the fabrics next to ech other and they look pretty good together. I was just worried about the Jedi robe. I'll try a color like medium gray, take a picture, and see what you think. If that doesn't work, well...I geuss I'll go for brown. Besides, looks are secondary when it comes to representing peacekeepers of the galaxy, right? Thank you for your good (and humbling) advice. Sorry for such a long message, and MTFBWY

Aha! I did the same thing with the belt in one trial costume. One wide and one narrow over each other, both from thrift stores with non-standard buckles. I did add some riveted cross pieces to hold the narrow belt in place and made the pouches form a couple of old leather purses. It came out pretty well, but since the whole thing is in black I only use it as an informal EU-type Jedi costume.

Just as a comment on skin tones, there are products that you can wear under your foundation that blend out the colour problems in your skin, for instance, I'm very fair skinned (I use porcelain #1 base) but I'm also very pink, thus I look really horid in GREEN, but with the colour correcter I can wear most shades of green, with no real problems, other than I really am not that big a fan of most greens.

I do not normally wear any either, ecept on occassion with costumes, or for very Black Tie evening events, (Opening Nights & The Tonys etc.) but when I need it, or have to wear a very bad colour then I use it, and scrub well after.
