Tolif Espen was born on Coruscant to wealthy parents. His Force aptitude detected while still in the womb, he was taken with honor and raised in the Jedi Temple.
Espen was a Padawan learner when Chancellor Palpatine declared himself Emperor and began the Jedi Scourge. When the fledgling Darth Vader led the Empire's clones into the Temple, Jedi Master Odel-Maurys instructed Tolif to shepherd a group of Younglings into the depths of the Jedi Library. Vader killed Maurys. Tolif survived the initial attack of Order 66. He emerged with what Jedi remained and was instructed by Master Yoda to take the surviving Younglings into hiding on Alderaan.
Tolif established a secret Jedi bunker in the far north wasteland of Alderaan's Tundaar region and waited for Yoda to join him. News spread of the galaxy-wide Jedi massacre. Yoda was finally able to send a coded message to Alderaan: Tolif Espen was now a Jedi Knight and charged with the safety and training of the Younglings in his care.
Bail Organa of Alderaan provided provisions and news to the fugitives. Tolif learned that Yoda was in exile on Degobah and that Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, one of his heroes, was still alive and in exile on Tatooine. The Jedi trained in secret, and as the Younglings grew into Padawans – all under the same Master – they began covert missions over the next twenty years to aid the birth of the rebellion against the Empire.
Of the eight Espen Padawans, three met death at the red blade of Darth Vader, now transformed into a hideous black apparition. Espen decided to hunt and destroy Vader. He and Padawan Araephea traveled to Anaxes and met Vader in the famous Citadel. Even though they ambushed the Dark Lord, he killed Araephea and severed Espen’s right leg. Vader left Espen alive with hopes of tracking the Jedi to his base or implicating rebel sympathizers who aided him, but Espen eluded the Dark Lord with the help of a Bothan spy named Trok Bro’lya. Tolif returned to Alderaan.
Bail Organa revealed that while on a secret mission, his daughter Leia intercepted a coded message containing the Death Star Plans. He sent word around the Galaxy for the few surviving Jedi to regroup on Alderaan, and Leia was sent to Tatooine to recruit Obi-Wan Kenobi out of hiding. Tolif recalled his four remaining Padawans. The time had come.
The Empire intercepted Princess Leia's ship, and she was taken prisoner – but not before sending two droids to finish her mission. Kenobi experienced some delays in returning to Alderaan where the Jedi waited. In a stroke of brash malevolence, the Empire destroyed Alderaan in the first display of the Death Star’s power.
After twenty years in exile, Tolif Espen was dead. His was one of millions of voices that cried out in terror and was suddenly silenced that day.
