Soo the nominations for the 2005 Oscar Awards are in and 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith' has managed to grab only 1 Oscar nomination and it's in the category for Best Makeup along with 'Cinderella Man' and 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. Best Makeup... Where the heck is the nomination for Best Costume Design!? The nominations for said category are: 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' 'Memoirs of a Geisha' 'Mrs. Henderson Presents' 'Pride and Prejudice' 'Walk the Line' Did these people not WATCH the movie? Did they not see the absolutely stunning, original and brilliant costumes in Ep III or did they all just go, oh it's Jedi's they all look alike, nothing new here? To see the full list of categories and their nominees go here: www.oscar.com/nominees/list.htmlWhat do you guys think? Do you think Episode III deserved a nomination in Costume Design? Do you think it deserved a nomination in any of the other categories?

Unfortunately, the Star Wars saga has never been high on the Academy's movie list.
One nomination is a bit unusual though. I would have expected "Best Sound", "Best Visual Effects", and perhaps "Best Editing".

Probably because the people behind the oscars realize how what a poor director and writer and how uncreative Lucas actually is. I have to admit, RotS isn't as riddled with errors as TPM, but that scene between Anakin and Padme when she's brushing her hair... My fiance's 13 year old step-sister can write better than that...

No, Lucas is a very good creative artist. The Academy is frankly being petty and snobbish, I think. Now even in the technical categories, it seems.

I'm sorry, but Lucas is not a good creative artist. Back when he did American Graffiti, he had talent, kind of like that expression "Everyone has one novel in them". That was his 'one novel'. Don't confuse the popularity of Star Wars with Lucas being a skilled writer/director. People love Highlander too, and when the original is viewed, it's really nothing special when compared to the TV series I like Star Wars, or more accurately, I like the concept of the Jedi, but that doesn't mean I like Lucas or can't see the flaws in his work. I was watching Tron the other night with my fiance, and we realized that the transport Flynn, Tron and Yori use to try and evade Sark's carrier is clearly the basis for Count Dooku's solar sail (which was also featured in Star Trek:Insurrection) As I've said before, Phantom Menace has mistakes that a film student would not be allowed to get away with, and I can't respect a major film maker that makes such mistakes without noticing.

I'd have to walk a line between Tanzan and Ani-Chay on this.....
Lucas is a very good creative artist. SW and it's effects literally blew the doors off the film industry and made all the movies we enjoy today possible. The story was epic and caught the imagination of much of the world over two (going on three if my kids count) generations now. His ability to visualize what isn't there or hasn't been done is clearly manifest.
NOW that being said: GL is absolutely horrid when it comes to continuity, storyline details, and intimate dialog. I think these last three movies could have been Ocsar contenders if he had partnered on the writing and played to his strengths. look at the ending battle between Obi and Ani...Vader. Spielberg handled that and it helped the movie tremendously.
all this of course......is only my opinion.

Again, I do not deny that Lucas once had talent, but as I said before, do not confuse the popularity of Star Wars for actual creative skill. There are so many elements taken from other films and themes (such as Dooku's solar sail) that completely ruin any claim at 'creativity' on his part. Even Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back had a curved lightsaber before AotC came out...

Well I can't say I'd ever claim that the acting was outstanding (in most cases) or that the scripts were either and there are definately points in the films where the CGI was to me very obviously CGI (and usually over done in those instances) and not at all as wonderful as I've come to expect from Lucas' visual effects team.
But.
I really did think that the costumes should have warranted a nomination for Costume Design; because, and maybe this is just my bias as a costumer coming out, they were outstanding. The design teams and Trisha Biggar and her crew did an amazing job and I think it's a shame that if the movie industry won't recognize that, that there isn't a way for the fans to do so.
If Episode III actually wins the Oscar for makeup, I will be so very, very surprised because I am 98% certain that 'Narnia' will win it.

I didn't see Narnia, but from what I have seen of it, you're probably right.
And the costumes definitley deserve a nomination... They're just stunning.

The academy is been upset with lucas for so many years because of him not putting the actors name in the beginning like other movies. He waits till the end. Which I personally like that ideal and wish other movies would do it.

Which I personally like that ideal and wish other movies would do it. It's less the Academy and more the Screen Actors Guild, the Writer's Guild and the Director's Guild. Unions... He does his credits like they used to... But, on movies that are serials...like the shorts he loved as a child...it was cut into the first scene because action had to happen first. Now most movies have opening scenes befoe the title.
