Small town life: I grew up in rural Ohio, about 30 miles from the Indiana border. This is where I went to high school. Yes, the school is still used as a high school. The last major update was done in 1971. The grade school I went to closed down while I was in junior high (no middle school here). The cannons weren't there when I went (and no it wasn't in 1923) The best thing about my area is the Lake. Grand Lake St. Marys. It is the largest inland lake in Ohio and still teh 3rd largest man-mde lake in the U.S. (it was hand-dug, not likew those dam-created lakes) Can't have a lake without lighthouses. Our lake has 4 now although it only had one when I was growing up We also have the Miami-Erie canal going right through town. I used to love to hike the towpath. Well, don't know what else to say except it is a agricultural area so there are lots of these: Wapakoneta, the county seat, was the hometown of Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon. (Although he was born in St. Marys) There is a museum dedicated to him there. Now I live on the other side of the lake in Mercer County.

Well, Jedimom, I am actually from just south of where you are from on I-75, a suburb of Dayton called Centerville, OH. I went to Centerville High School and the University of Dayton.
Since leaving Ohio, I have lived in Bozeman, Montana; Anchorage, Alaska; Glendale (a suburb of Los Angeles sandwiched between Burbank and Pasadena),California; Fort Worth, Texas; and now Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

I was born, raised, and still live in the wonderful East Texas city of Longview. During College I went to a school 30 mins away. I stayed in the dorms, but drove home every weekend. The worst part of the year here is when all the Pine Trees are pollinating. My blue car almost turns green from all the yellow stuff. If you leave something outside for an hour it will be coated in a fine layer of pollen. Two of the things that Longview is known for: We are the heart of the piney woods of East Texas with several small and large lakes with in driving distance, and the Great Texas Ballon Race. The skies are filled with hot air balloons during the week of the races.
I have always enjoyed the size of Longview. It is big enough to have 2.5 movie theaters (1-has 2 THX screens+ 8 other, the other is decent, and the 1/2 is a really old theater that does second run movies for a dollar), 2 hospitals, 3 highschools, decent size mall, soon to be 3 wlamart supercenters. Yet it is small enough that there are no huge highway like roads you have to take to get from one side to the other. We have a few 6 lane roads, but they are located right around the mall, all others are 4-2. There are still several cattle farms around the edge of the town. I could easily ride my bike just about anywhere in town and be home with in a few hours. We are located an hour from Shreveport, LA and 2 hours from Dallas. I couldn't see moving anywhere else. ;D

At the turn of the last century, schools that trained teachers were call "Normal" schools, Thus the school was Illinois State Normal University. The town grew up around the school and changes its name from North Bloomington to Normal. Sometime in the 50's, they dropped the Normal from the name of the school.
Just an odd fact: The actor that plays Jack on Will & Grace went to school there.
