I'm in the process of building a SW website with Freeservers. I've gotten almost everything up and running, and it's looking pretty good! (for someone who's never built one before, and is using the Free account... Unfortunately, I know nothing about HTML code (except what it stands for) and I can't get my Polls or my Visitor Counter on! They say to 'copy and paste below HTML code to your website' Okay, Paste it WHERE??? On the address bar? On the page itself? Before the address? After the address? Please help! No one has visited my poor little site, and I really want these things to work! I hate to bother youn with this, but I need some plausible help....

Basically you need to see your page as HTML code - if your using freeserver hopefully there's a way you can actually view the code of your page. That's where it gets pasted... The code is basically wirtten in order from top of the page to bottom. You will have to read the page and see where the text is in the code so you can place your pasting...

If you dont know what html code does your introuble. Heres something for you to try, right click on this post and then 'veiw source' from the menu that pops up.
It should open another window with lots of text in it. Thats the source code of this forums html page. Your web browser basically interprets that code to display what it does on screen.
Its in that type of code on your webpage that the counter code needs inserting.

I can't remember if it was Freeservers or some other free website host, but I remember I tried it and it was for extreme beginers (which I was at the time). I chose the layout and all I had to do was type in a box to put in content. It allowed NO customization, so I decided to learn HTML and code my own webpages. HTML is quite simple once you start gathering info and making test pages (I just use Notepad). I say try to gather some HTML info and try it, then you will probably want to use Tripod or Angelfire (or some other site that offers free hosting) to upload your HTML pages. Then you can use Polls and Counters.

Well, Jeffrek, I tried what you suggested. About right-clicking my web page and going tom 'veiw source'? Now all that funny gtext and stuff makes sense. I geuss HTML code is just the Net's way of drawing a picture and writing text. (I know; you're probably thinking 'duh!' ) It didn't work. I tried three times; all in different places...but nothing showed up. Not even an error message! Anyone know where an 'HTML Dictionary' is? Freeservers is okay, but I'm a super-beginner and I have trouble with it! It has more options, but only if you pay. :/ As to your suggestion, Ral, I really don't want to start my web page all over again; at least not at this point. I've had enough trouble with accidentally deleting either the whole site, or all the text and pics on the Home page. I've had to start over from scratch at least three times...all because of my own ignorance! Angelfire's FREE!?!?!? (see how new I am to Web hosting?) In answering Belden's question, the web address is www.undercoverjedi.freeservers.com/Technically, it's 'up and running' now, but it's so simple, it's practically bare-bones. I tried putting up a Photos page, but the photos wouldn't all load. I just hope my opening message isn't weird or dumb or over-the-top. Better go now. Thanks for the help! P.S. I did get my Polls up and running. Actually, I cheated. I put in a link instead of the HTML code.

Your site looks great! It's more interesting than mine is (I took mine down for time management reasons). You've done very well for an uber beginner... Keep it up and you'll be a pro in no time.

I'm not sure how templates work, I never used one, but I assume you need to paste the line of code for the counter into the html code for your site, right after the line that says </div> and before the line that says </body> That would be around the bottom of the page.

*pops head in after skimming message boards* It's me again. FINALLY figured out how the whole thing works. With Freeservers, I have to copy the HTML code, go to 'edit text' on one of the text box templates, switch to HTML format, and paste it in there! Now I'm going wild with it! BTW, neat site, Leda!
