Another "find" in the Kid's Dept.:
The new SW Insider (#97 December - Luke & Leia cover) has a review of The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader by Ryder Windham. I had actually seen it when I was looking for the latest Last of the Jedi and found the idea intriguing.
It is a retelling of the SW story from a certain point of view -- Vader's! And it's not just the movies, but also incorporates the movie novels, EU books, comics, etc.
It's also reformatted so it's not all chronological -- it has a lot of flashback and a lot of time periods skipped, although the pivotal scenes are all there with Vader's thoughts inserted.
It's a pretty fast read, and pretty well done, I thought, and especially for a kid's book. (It's not going to have some of the more "intense" themes as in, say, a Matthew Stover book.)
After some others read the book, I'd like to discuss some points... :-)

I also read the book about a week or two ago. I really enjoyed it and all the new little stories great. It was cool to see some of the comics turn into stories and just to be able to get some of this info.
The book does recap the movies but doesn't go line for line which makes it a nicer read as we have all seen or can see the movies. I was hoping for more info on early Vader or Clone Wars Anakin but I guess some of that has been done or is going to be done and we can just read those story lines.
If you get a chance do read this book I think anyone would enjoy it and you can share it with little one if you have them. Again the kids department has another great story line only available to them.
Also to anyone who has read the book does the fight with Vader, Luke, and Leia over the force crystal appear in any of the comics or other novels? Just enjoyed that part and would like more, Thanks.

Encounter at Mimban... pg 86-87 of Ultimate Visual Guide (the 2005 version, although the next version may be the same pages). Have not read that story... looks like a comic. Glad you liked the book. I still have some thoughts but want others to read first so we can all "discuss" .

Just ordered the Rise and Fall of Vader. As for the battle between Vader, Luke and Leia, yeah, that's from Splinter of the Minds' Eye. Very interesting read. You see a lot of what eventually became "Empire Strikes BAck" in that book...

I still have some thoughts but want others to read first so we can all "discuss" . "Encounter at Mimban" was the title of that two page spread on pages 86-87 of the Ultimate Visual Guide. Sorry I wasn't clear about that. Glad to know the source of the original story. Thanks.

Ah thank you very much for the title. I will have to look into that as I really liked the scene. Sorry if I brought this discussion off topic I was just interested in the story more.

Not off-topic... adds to the discussion. I'm now curious to read the book "Splinter of the Mind's Eye". BTW, I went home last night and looked at that two page spread again and the illustrations are mostly comic-like. I think that's why I assumed the story was from a comic. Of course a lot of the SW stories appear in multiple places and forms.

Such a tough read. Very old...so it's written 'earthly' and very corny

I liked soem things about it, but even though he said he wasn't gonna spend too much time on things in the films he did. I don't care about the blasted pod race, I think it's such a useless scene. And they keep adding more to it in dvds and books.
I digress.
I found it intresting he started to blame Qui-Gon for soem things as well and although we get a look at what his thoughts are as he watches Luke being attacked by the Emperor I thought there was more he would have perhaps thought of before grabbing Sidious and hurling him down the shaft.
For younger readers it's a good project and a book to get alook at the light and dark and right and wrong according to anakin, for more mature readers I think it's something that although we see new items on, most of it were things we have seen before on how Anakin and vader think from other novels and comics.
