Finished reading this book a few days ago. Wow. Awesome book IMHO. Steven Barnes did an awesome job on his first forray into the SW Universe. I loved the way he humanized the Clone Troopers. You will not look at one the same way again.

I just finished it also... and I agree... awesome job! It's up there among my faves! I love stories that deal with moral struggles... and his portrayal of the clone troopers was wonderfully deep.

I too am forced to agree. It is an excellent book and I think there was a good balance of characters.
. . . . . . . . . . .
<possible minor spoilers> It is nice to see a starwars book that while it has Jedi heroes in the plot also shows how 'ordinary' people (even ones as looked down upon as clones) can also have the determination, conviction and self sacrifice to make a difference too. I shall certainly be looking out for anyhting else Steven Barnes pens in the Starwars playground and I might just take another look at some of his earlier work too, although I have already read Dreampark and enjoyed that too.

I enjoyed this book a lot.:-) it's refreshing to read a book that hasn't copious amounts of expletives throughout the pages. He did well bringing emotion alive without dumbing down his vocabulary.
I also liked the showcasing of Kit Fisto, one of my faves. Gotta love the dude's smile.:-D I like how Steve showed that even clone troopers have their own culture, vaules and such and really want to be looked opon as regular people.

Jangotat was an awsome character. ::finished the book last week:: I'm really glad they did a story where you get a little from the clone troopers view. it was a huge twist and the ending... im just wonderign what the growth rate on the baby will be? its is gonna be normal, excelerated, or slightly excelerated.... to bad we wont find out.

On the whole, thought this book was pretty good. I couldn't find Shatterpoint in paperback at the time, so this was my first forray into the Clone Wars novels. I can't quite put my finger on them, but there are a few quirks about Barnes' writing style that I don't care for, just in terms of sentence structure and several occurrences of pronoun confusion. Having taken a creative writing class last semester, I've gotten pretty critical about my fiction these days! I really did like Kit's character in the book, as well as the portrayal of Kenobi. My favorites though, were the clone troopers, just because of how varied their personalities were, regardless of the fact that they were all cut from the same mold. That said, I liked Jangotat when he was still Nate. I understand what Barnes was trying to do in making him the unique individual among his brothers, but it seemed more than a little forced. Did Sheeka react to him simply because he was the commander, or was there something else about him? About the only other problem I had with this was the sense of pacing. While the book did read very well and very quickly (the ultra-short chapters contribute greatly to this), sometimes I would have difficulty figuring out how much time, exactly, had gone by. In any case, this was a good read and I'm glad I decided to get through some of these books before the movie comes out!
