Well, Anyone reading some of Nova and my posts in the costuming threads knows that finding fabric is not the easiest thing to do.
There is a lot of misinformation at the fabric stores...some of the clerks have no clue and finding fabric is a mind numbing experience...at least finding CORRECT fabric, nice flowing fabric, natural fabrics......
Hanc.ck fabrics by me was a bust...the clerk knew diddly! I have made 5 trips to JoAnne fabrics and have been told the following:
Linen is sold only in the spring.... Linen does not come in brown or black... The only linen they have available (again in spring) is a linen and polyester blend....
I can't believe that in an area as large as the Chicagoland area you can't find a lousy bolt of dark brown/black linen....but you can't!!
What has been your experience in dealing with fabric stores in your area?
I know that there is fabric available at Wal-Mart and stuff...but I was really hoping to stay with a natural fiber other than wool......
the two tunics that I have made so far...I have used muslin....100% cotton-but frays like crazy.....and only comes in the light colors.....

I have had really bad luck with stores like Joanne and Handthingy. I did find a bunch of black linen but it was extreamly poor quality. I have been tocd by my mother in law taht we have some really great stores here in seattle and I know their is one in a shoping place I 'm going to try they do alot of coustems and such so i will ask. Maybe try somewere on line. If I find places here i could asways get you some and ship it to you. I'll let you know. I know we have some great fabric stores. Any one who tell you linen only comes in colors and not brown black or Kaki is smokin some kinda somethin I've seen it in at least four shades of brown three shades of green black and grey. I'll be on a hunt.

Thank you for your input Jade.... As a Jedi, I will need to practice patience I guess and keep trying....
I will have to broaden my search .......I tried to confine it to a 25 mile radius of my house, but it has been slim pickens....I will have to "reach out" further....
What are the names of some of the biger fabric stores besides Hanc.ck and Joanne...It would help my search if I had some other names to look for.

Here's an idea. We saw alot of nice dark brown fabric in NYC. Maybe you could get a piece of fabric that is a nice color, send it to Nova, and see if she can find a matching color in a suitable fabric for you. Even if you have to buy half a yard to see how it flows yourself, it might be worth it!

Schph, swatches will be in the mail shortly, several shades of linen, 2 brown. I can always get it & ship it to you, or they may drop ship from the store. Is there a MINNESOTA FABRICS near you? They're usually pretty awesome. I'd say try and find a non-chain fabric store, many times they stock more of the basic stuff, and less of the trendy thing.

Around here there are no Minnesota Fabrics stores anymore.... I believe here in the midwest, they merged with Hanc.ck Fabrics and that was a nightmare trip! They had ZERO!

no problem....trying to find fabric really has been a major pain.....
I will be ordering shortly and will keep you updated as to how long it took and how good it is...
I am really excited about not having to run around and be disappointed.....one could be sewing or reading or practicing their lightsaber training instead of having mind numbing conversations with fabric store clerks who are even more clueless than me!! ;D

Latest update on the quest for fabric!
I ordered two kinds of fabric on-line at Fabric.com
One is a medium weight linen blend in Bittersweet (a supposed dark brown) and the other is a lightweight linen blend in Chestnut color...
I will let you all know how long it took and how nice this fabric is.....

Was at Wal-Mart today pickin up my Layaway of SW action figures ( My daughters birthday) Anyway found MONK cloth it is 100% cotton and is like basket weave. I is about a med weave but it looks vey uniqe I really like it it is very natural. They also have alot of unbleaced cotton. I asked if they would have more of the Monk fabric she said she was getting more and it was a regular thing they carried I also found natural cottons that are from Inda their. I was im pressed. The monk fabric is going to be comming in various browns, two diffrent greens, purple, pink, teal beige. I was pretty surprised. I might intergrate it into my coustme some how I like the fact that it is textured and natural looking.
