I know it's never been discussed onscreen, but what caused the change in Obi-Wan's name? Where the natives of Tattooine too stupid to pronounce 'Obi-Wan', or did it simply become corrupted into 'Old Ben' over time? I can't believe he was trying to go incognito (rather than just exile) as if he were, he could have just changed his name completely...

Half a truth is often the best way to obscure the whole truth. Obi-Wan needed to drop his title and "Obi-Wan" appellation due to his renown during the Clone Wars and the Empire's hunt for the Jedi. An old hermit named "Ben" who was some sort of aesthetic and thought to be a bit looney would be so far off the "Obi-Wan" mark as to render him invisible. It is also possible that Ben was his birth name. The Jedi could have had the practice of re-naming acolytes as many such orders/religions do.

Didn't Luke know him as old Ben Kenobi? People would have known "General Kenobi".... or maybe not on Tatooine.

"If there's a bright center of the universe; you're on the planet it's farthest from."
yes. luke did say: "I wonder if he means old Ben Kenobi." when hearing of Artoo's search for General Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Tatooine was far enough out on the Rim to remain a safe haven.

The Empire never really had much of an interest in Tatooine...which is odd really, when you consider the minor events there that changed the galaxy.

On another note Tatooine wasn't envolved in the Clone Wars (I think) and when Obi-Wan went there in the first movie he never left the ship so no one on Tatooine knows him as Obi-Wan Kenobi rather than Ben Kenobi (With the exception of Luke's aunt and uncle).

It is also possible that Ben was his birth name. The Jedi could have had the practice of re-naming acolytes as many such orders/religions do. That's certainly a possibility, after all, the Sith re-name their apprentices, it would make sense if the Jedi followed a similar tradition.

I think it's just a nickname. I also think that Vader never went to back to Tatooine because it's where his mom died, so there's all that painful memory stuff.

Could be. Then why did Owen tell Luke Ben was just a crazy old man?

Uncle Owen wanted Luke to stay away from Ben! He was trying to keep Luke on the farm. And he'd know that any droid looking for Obi-Wan Kenobi would be bringing trouble.

I know it's not canon but I saw a graphic novel where a resurrected Darth Maul with bigger horns and mechanical legs came to kill toddler Luke. Owen was aiming his rifle when Old Ben hopped out of the sand and cut DM down again. Owen told Ben that he was just trouble and kept endangering Luke, and that Ben should stay away. I thought it was pretty cool.

Really?? Whats the novel called? Ive not heard of it. I knew shortly after ROTS ben kept going to check on Luke when he wouldn't be spotted. This was a younger kids book mind you. Thats when Obi-wan went to the cantina and he heard that Anakin/vader was still alive and that there was another Jedi out on the run. So he went to help him along with Qui-gon talking and teaching him still.

I would also like the know what book you are talking about! Ive seen the picture of that darth maul, kinda reminds me of the cyber demon from DOOM3 on x-box. As for old ben i think it is more or less a nick name. For example My name is William Anderson Perry yet I go by Andy(comes from Anderson). So Ben may be the slang easy form of Obi-Wan.

I have no idea what its called, I was just browsing the SW section in Chapters. It had a collection of SW shorts by different artists. Some were more realistic (like this Darth Maul one) others were Clone Warsy, and others were really cartoony.
