I know Luke's whole thing was the original story, but to be honest, I've never rated him as much of a Jedi (and him becoming a Jedi Master is only EU) If the films had been made in sequence, the logical thing for Obi-Wan and Yoda to do would have been, rather than go into exile after the twins were born, they should have gone straight back to Coruscant together and opened a can of whoopass on Palpatine and Vader. Anakin couldn't defeat Obi-Wan when they fought, there's no way as Vader that he could have stood upto Ob-Wan in his prime (Only reason he did in ANH is because Obi-Wan was getting on in years and let him win) They could then have both taken on Palpatine and would probably have defeated him. Well you seem to forget that palpatine took out 3 jedi masters in about 4 seconds, and even yoda had a hard time just weakening him. Now back to the actual thread, in my point of view obiwan knew that the emperor would try to turn luke to the darkside, along with the fact that luke would not have stood a chance against the emperor. Maybe what he meant by killing vader means the same as when he told that vader killed his father. Perhaps meaning anakin must kill vader which would bring anakin back from the darkside. (just like a jedi, cryptic as always ;D) there for, the chosen one would do what he was meant to do, destroy the sith and by dieing bringing balance back to the force. "sigh" and i'm spent!

Yeah, in the end, the only way Luke could succeed was if Anakin killed Vader. And then the emperor. But I still wonder if Obi-Wan and Yoda had that in mind. It seems that all they really knew was that their feelings and intuition said that Luke had to confront Vader. They trusted the Force; I don't think they had a conscious plan beyond that.

Well Anakin was still the choosen one but I think after ROTS Yoda and Obi-wan threw that out in the trash and thus saw Luke as the one to fix it all.

Well, after much thought and fan-fic I think I have an answer....
Obi-Wan and Yoda's original plan was to train Luke as a Jedi and have him defeat Palpatine the old fashioned way. I guess they checked Luke and Leia's midichlorines when they were born and Luke was the one with the high count, probably as high as Anakin's. Leia's probably wasn't as high, but still Jedi-quality, that's why Ben didn't think she could go after Palpatine.
They didn't train either as children because Sidius and/or Vader might have sensed it and they already knew that they couldn't take them. So, they relied on surprise and let things die down. Luke's potential talent must have been so high that they were sure that they could train him at any age.
BUT....
They probably didn't expect Luke to stay on Tatooine as long as he did. I guess if Luke had left for the Academy, Obi-Wan would have followed and found a way to lead him
Once Luke was on Dagobah, they would train him, leaving the news about who his father was as the last thing, his Jedi Trails. But Luke blew up all their plans when he ran off to Bespin. By the time you see Yoda and Obi-Wan on Dagobah, they've let go of their hopes of Luke succeeding, but since Luke asked, Yoda told him what his final trial as a Jedi needed to be, confronting Vader.
As it turned out, Luke surprised both ghostly Yoda and Obi-Wan by getting the job done in a way tha they'd never even thought of. And Anakin fulfilled his role in balancing the Force in the end.
Aaah, new I feel better.
