Don't know the answer about the raw silk, but the Hanthingy's brown calcutta is exactly what I used for the tunic shown in my avatar. I was surprised at the color when it first came (I ordered it online) but I realized it gave better contrast with my dark brown robe. Now it's my favorite tunic... but I only have two so that's not saying much! But.... you might considered overdyeing it, if you're comfortable with dyeing. I overdyed a dark brown undertunic... the color was pretty, but the shade was a bit orange-ish and sort of clashed with the khaki outer tunic, which was a bit on the greenish side. So I overdyed the undertunic in the Rit dark brown, not enough to darken much, but enough to change it to a more pleasing shade. Of course this was a 3 yard garment and not 7 yards of tunic, tabbards, and obi. So just a thought...

Thank you. ***bows***
Sadly dying anything is not my forte nor do I have a big enough tub to put material in to do it. I tried it once & it looked horrible.

Y'know I still look around sometimes for bourette silk, but it looks like it just isn't made anymore. Silk jersey is at least out there, though not cheap. But it has too much sheen for my taste for a Jedi undertunic, though it can be made into lots of other things. I especially like the rust... it's different. I recently ordered some of this from them: www.fashionfabricsclub.com/catalog_itemdetail.aspx?ItmID=MM489It's also very thin, and very dark... almost black... but it looks good with a lighter color outer tunic. I'm making some extra undertunics, so it's great to have some new and different colors. Thanks!

The nice thing about having extra undertunics is that you can change those and wear the outer tunic a little longer, too.

Does anyone know what kind of material the undershirt fro the epi. 3 obi is made out of. For cons i just wear a long sleeve shift that looks goofy.

I don't actually know what it's made out of, but double knit cotton sounds right for what you see on screen.

If you're looking for a nice turtle neck, KMart has them right now in tan and dk brown. I think they were around $8-10, not bad, and for the sewing challenged, an easy out.

I've been recently noticing that calcutta is becoming a rarer find of fabric & osnaburg can still be found. I was wondering has anyone seen calcutta fabric? or at least what it's called now? We don't have a Han_co_cks anymore in our town. Of course Walmart no longer carries fabric & we do have a Joannes fabric store but calcutta was not even in this year.
I'm still attempting to locate a chocolate colored fabric like calcutta if at all possible or even the sand or cream color---we're going to attempt to dye some if we can locate some please.
There are times I wish I had bought the whole bolt of chocolate when I saw it at Walmart when I started costuming in 2005---I was to "scared" that I'd be spending too many credits on something I might not be able to use-----huge mistake. Everytime I look up on the web to find calcutta they show all these strange fabrics instead.

I have not seen calcutta fabric. It's harder to find those 'homespun' fabrics it seems, but I think that they come and go depending on fashion.
There are some homespun looking cottons on www.dharmatrading.com, but I think they're a little spendy. And they only carry white and black. Since they sell dyes the expect people to dye their own. They are THE source for dyes, are very reliable and have lots of good advice on their web page.

Try looking under "Indian Homespun" sometimes they call it that.

Searching with 'loose weave' sometimes gets the fabric. I was looking for curtain fabric on fashionfabricsclub.com and they had calcutta, but it was a cotton/polyester blend and only in aqua and yellow. Not very Jedi colors. I also search on 'solid' plus the color I'm looking for to see what turns up.
