Fashion Fabrics club is having a cotton gauze sale, $4/yard, but when I look at the pictures, it looks just like crinkle cotton. It's a little thin, but remember how think Anakin's undertunic was in AOTC. It should do fine for undertunics. But I haven't seen what looks like crinkle cotton called cotton gauze. Is it the same stuff? I have some crinkle cotton (that's what the label said) that I'm going to make a long undertunic out of (lucky find on the $1/yd table at Wal-Mart), but it looks heavier than the FFC fabric.

Gauze would be extremely thin. Maybe for an undertunic, but I wouldn't use it on an outer. I am pretty sure its not teh same as crinkle cotton. And I personally wouldn't buy any gauze unlessI could check it out personally. I've had gauze that tore while I was working with it

Leda and I have over and under tunics of the crinkle cotton gauze. I do suggest lining the over tunic. otherwise it's VERY see through.

Wow! Jackpot! That sure looks like the stuff you want! Usually crinkle cotton, and cotton gauze are the same. Also, I've seen it called bubble gauze. Your best bet is to buy a swatch and see if it's what you want.
So many colors... ;D I'll be stocking up!
But like Mynn said, it does need to be lined, either with itself, or with a thin silk.

Wow, thanks. I've dispaired of finding dark brown in this stuff at local stores. And such a price!

I'm sending Jaryk my swatches for his swatch book. It'll have a dark brown swatch of the crinkle cotton. Try www.dharmatrading.com and go to their fabrics link then to cotton.. Gauze.. There's two types of this there. Cotton bubble gauze and "heavier cotton gauze". There prices are cheaper per yard the more yards are bought. It comes in a natural colour, if you want brown, you'll have to dye it. It's pretty cheaop unless you stumble over a $1 bolt of brown then Dharma's deal is beaten.:-D If unsure this is what you want, get a swatch of all the two differant weights of their bubble gauze before buying some. They also offer a swatch book with all their fabrics in it, witch they pay shipping on. I buy their silks and dyes. and haven't been disappointed.

I'm really only thinking of the cotton gauze for an undertunic, and an underdress for that woman-of-Rohan gown. Anakin's undertunic in ATOC is very thin, and looks like cotton gauze (though it's probably silk).
I don't really feel like dying fabric, so I lean toward the FashionFabricsClub cotton, but the Dharma swatch collection looks like a great deal. And they have hemp blend fabric; that's supposed to be as durable as linen, but it's tough to find.

I have the swatch collection but almost never order from them. Usually I'm ordering 10 yards and more and there's no way I want to deal with dying that amount of fabric. I use Dharma when I actually need white, as in fabric for chemises and medieval undertunics and veils.

I'd use the cotton gauze for Anikan's under tunic because it's afforadable. and looks pretty close to it in look, weight and such.. It's hard to dye large batches(10+ yards). You have to control the tempreture and keep it stable at 200 degrees for an hour. I prefer dying silks because they only require vinegar as the setting agent and hot temps. Dharma does have recipes for cold temps for dying silks but I hadn't tried that yet. Maybe it'll be easier than the hot method. Kai, I have the card of a woman who sews ren clothing and has raw silk already pre dyed if you'er interested. It's $5 ayrd at the time I bought some for my jedi tunics. I had a huge stack of swatches from her. She has every conceivable shade. I just wish I could find the swatches.

Kai, how wide is it? I've been looking for a better source for it for awhile. I can get it here, but the $$$ has gone up alot recently.

The silk noil that I've gotten from Thai Silks has been 45" wide, but it looks like the price has gone up to more like $6-7/yard for dyed noil, but that's still a decent price.

Yikes. I hadn't realized the dyed fabric had done up that much. The natural is still $4.50 per yard, though.

Yeah, Cheaper to get the natural and dye it. I tried the washing machine to dye fabric but with a roommate fiddling with the hot water heater gauge, it didn't turn out right. SO I'll have to use the on the stove method where I can control the tempreture better.
