Hey Primrodo,
Anakin's inner tunic is a dark brown, right? I'm trying to match the color of my pants. If you don't mind my asking, where did you find the right color silk crepe - a local shop or online?

Yup dark brown The colour isn't exact to the DAG swatch but it is QUITE close the material however is dead on The only thing though is that its 30 dollars a yard from a place called Satin Moon in California. They should have tan though still in stock Discontinued fabric sadly

What about Dharma trading company's silk crepe? it seems to be more affordable per yard.

Just a little update here. Occassionally, I poke around on ebay for 'bourette' silk, but the closest I have seen for fabric is nappy liners and yarns. A sleeveless bourette silk top on e-bay starts at $130. Ouch! This is a quote for a small piece of bourette silk I saw for sale ebay (very expensive and yellow, my worst color ever) that has a little info about bourette silk itself. "Presenting a brilliant lemon yellow French 18th century silk bourette named "Jaune Bouton d'Or" from where this comes in France. A wonderful hand-woven nubby silk woven from the rough outer parts of the cocoon. Soft in texture but strong enough for use. Silk bourette is getting incredibly hard to find today. "So, unless a miricle falls in my lap (or China seriously starts exporting this stuff) I don't expect to be finding that bourette silk jersey fabric (just like Qui-Gon's) anytime soon.

Small note....since CIV is right next door to the LA garment district, and I should have the Wednesday afternoon before things start (airlines permitting), I'm going to see if anyone has any jersey knit bourette silk there. I got some good advice from people at CostumeCon who have been there about where are the most likely places. If there is any it very likely will be so fabulously expensive that I would never pay for it, but I'd love to see if this stuff even exists. Obsessed? Noooooo, not me.

Would you share the name of the place or are you just going to the district itself and hit various shops?

I'm just going to the district. However, the garment district (they're web page says 'fashion district' I suppose to make it a little higher class for the tourists) is an area of several blocks of fabric, jewelry, clothing and related shops and wholesalers that are a mile or less from the CIV site.
I am aiming to start at 9th and Maple and work my way out for an afternoon. It's mostly fabric shops there and they look like they would have what I'm looking for are around there. I've also seen an online reference to that as a starting point for a LOTR costuming group. I'm told that Michael Levine's has the most unusual stuff, but is rather $$$, so it's generally last on people's lists if they can't find what they want. I'm told that you have the best chance of getting a deal if you can haggle in either Spanish or Yiddish, but I'll just have to do my haggling in English.

Pay cash, it always helps the deals.

I used to shop there regularly. Some shops will deal, some won't. I agree about the cash, though.
It's NOT a good part of town...very rough and industrial. When we'd drive up from Orange Co., we'd never go alone. Maybe that was just paranoia, but it's what the native Californians always advised.

Well, a lot depends on whether the airlines get me in on time. If they're late, I'll just have a nice dinner instead and maybe look at the shops at the Bonnaventure. They've changed my flight schedule so I get in two hours later, which crimps my plans a bit and leaves less room for airline lateness.
Oh yes, I've heard about the neighborhood. The LA Mission is not far at all from the garment district. LA is apparently trying to fix up their downtown, but it's still a work in progress.

In Nov 2005, on our way to FIDM, we drove by the Union Gospel mission. That area made my big, tall, brown-belt jujitsu husband nervous. While the garment district itself is OK during daytime, I would not advise walking alone to and from. Or walking , period. Taxi only.

Hmmmmm, I feel like I'm getting contradictory directives. Take cash, but it's near a bad neighborhood. Hmmmmm.
Well, it's a half mile bus ride from where I'm staying and they run every 5 minutes. If the airline gets me in on time. That change in their schedule really hurts 'cause I don't plan of shopping any later than 5 PM. After being on a plane for 5 hours, I won't be in the mood for much of it and I want to be rested for CIV.

Well, I think I'm going to have to write off any trips to the LA garment district after all while I'm there for CIV. There is a farmer's market in downtown LA and I'd like to go to that, but since it closes at 3 PM, and with the airline pushing back my arrival date, any meaningful shopping in the garment district is out because there just won't be enough time.
Ahh well, no biggie. If I had been really serious about wanting to go, I would have planned to come in on Tuesday. I NEVER plan any must-do activities on the same day of travel just because of the chance of flight delays, weather, etc. Some other trip, I guess. I don't need any more fabric right now and the scarcity of bourette silk even online makes it unlikely that I would have found any anyway (and just about impossible that there would be any at a price I would be willing to pay). I do think I want to ask around though and see if anyone else is going there.
