I just bought this cool looking gauze material at Walmart for $2.00 a yard to make the inner tunic with! It looks just like Obi-Wan's. I will let everyone know how it turns out.
Walmart has a lot of nice material for very good prices. I found some good outer tunic material I might use. It looks a lot like Mace Windu's tunic. I would like to shop around some more first to see if I can find something I like better before committing to it.
What kind of material did everyone else use? Got any tips for me?? ;D

My room mate helped me find some cottony blend stuff. And imitation vynal for the vest part of my Anakin costum. We found the undertunic material in the home decor section of Joe-Ann fabric. looks more like thin throw rug material but it'll works. It's all in presentation. i should have the costume within 2 weeks as for the belt i dont know when it'll arrive.

I used a cotton muslin in a natural color for Solorad's undertunic, and I think I will use the same thing for mine. I got it for $1.97 a yard a Wal-Mart. For the tunic, I used a cotton fabric from Wal-Mart, but I can't remember the name of it. They are out of stock right now, but hopefully they'll get more soon. I still have to make Solorad's tabard and obi!! It doesn't look like much before you wash it, but it looks really nice afterwards, and it's only $2.07 a yard. Which is nice, considering how many tunics I had to do to get it right! ;D I need to get the name for myself anyway, so I let you know once I do.
It appears the Force is with me, and I will actually get everything done before Celebration II!

I used natural unbleached muslin for the under tunic, it has a nice colour and is a pretty comfortable fabric for the use, plus the price is good. The short sort of Obi Wan/Qui Gonn Jedi that I did I used an unbleached cotton duck fabric for the tunic tabard and obi. I've never actually worn that one, I'm not completely happy with the way I look in it, so I made my long one(see intro, opps I put that in the wrong place) I was really a bit dissapointed that they didn't put either Obi Wan,s or QuiGonn's EpI costumes in MoM museum tour show. The fabrics look very different in the flesh so to speak, although the fabrics that they used seem to have a similar look in a lot of ways.

Hello Nova, and welcome! We (especially me!) definitely could use the advice of a seamstress here! This is my first experience with sewing, and though it has been hard, it has also been lots of fun. I do have a question that I hope you can help me with. I am trying to make the undertunics for my husband and myself to look like Obi-Wan's. Specifically the sleeves. My question is, do you have any recommondations on how to do the gather at the wrists? I have made the sleeves several inches longer and just bunched them at the wrists, but they will not stay and don't really look right. Any help here would be hot!!! (Hehe, I like Jar Jar too! Thanks!

I'm not an expert but i might be able to offer some help on this. when my roomies mom made my obi-wan costume she took extra fabric left over from the shirts and tunic and stuff and made several long strips to wrap around the wrist. like a modern day wrist wrap boxers use but without it going over or around your fingers. it seemed to work and its what i'm going this time around for the Anakin costume as well.

I used a cotton ribknit fabric in natural/off white (similar to what you find on jacket cuffs, but not as heavy, the muslin sleeve on my inner tunic ends about just above the elbows, then I made a long pc of r-knit cuff that is long enough to go the rest of the length of the sleeve times 2, taper in from top of cuff to the 1/2 way point at wrist lengthat the 1/2 way pt it should be as wide as your wrist measurement plus seam allowance, taper from wrist pt to the other end, fold so that seams face each other inside of a double thick tube, join to upper sleeve. If you do it right you will have a clean finish seam on both the inside and outside of the knit part of the sleeve, where the sleeves join, you will have a seam facing inside . I find this very comfortable, and it looks good, the inner sleeve looks as if it could be a knit,as it seems to cling to the arm, and they did use knit in several costume pieces,or parts.

My inner tunics are both made from a rather stretchy cotton blend (I have two sets). The sleeves are full from the shoulder to the elbow. From the elbow to the wrist, they are tight. They are also extra long (extending to the knuckles if stretched past the wrist) so they gather nicely.
The general pattern is the same as my outer tunic (bathrobe pattern modified), but is cut slightly smaller so everything layers nicely. Generally, I make each layer larger (slightly) than what it goes over.

The last under tunic that I made for a client, I did a longish sleeve, and then did about 4 rows of strech stiched narrow elastic inside it, it gathered the sleeves nicely, and kept them from falling down over the hands, was not tight enough to be a bother, I think I might try that on my next tunic.

Since I'm just beginning to get my proverbial sewing-machine-foot wet again, I'm going to be doing my first inner tunic out of material that I bought a million years ago when I had a vague notion of making something to wear to the Sterling Rennaisance Festival. The upside: it's a nice, light cotton gauze in an off-white color. The downside: it's so light, it might be somewhat see-through, especially under lights. That shouldn't be TOO much of a problem, since it's the UNDER tunic. The other strike against the material is that it has a slight, almost unnoticeable decoration. Little grey blotches and white swirlies that look like their just part of the fabric. But I really don't think they'll show up enough to make a difference. Worst comes to worst, I'll just end up with a pretty, feminine new shirt. ;D

The pattern may not really matter, at least some of the Jedi have subtle variations in fabric, so if it looks like part of the weave, it might just pass for the look of the fabric and not a print. the only parts of the inner tunic that show are generally the sleeves and neckline.

Well, I finished the inner tunic tonight and...it's...interesting, LOL. To be honest, I was just screwing around to see what I could do with the sewing machine I have, since it's missing the stitch length nob. But once I got started, I couldn't stop 'til it was finished. I don't think I'll be using it in a costume, but it was a good training exersize. One thing I will NOT be using again is the gauze material. It's extremely difficult to sew, because it's so delicate and easily snagged. Plus, as I feared, it's way too transparent. Which begs the question that's been on my mind all evening... Do female jedi wear bras? Heh. ;D
