At one point in my life, I was a Lego fiend. I didn't have a great many sets, but what I did have, I built and rebuilt more times than I care to think about. Mostly, I had the various Space Collections and the old Pirate sets, including the Clipper Ship and El Dorado Fortress. For whatever reason, though, I have never bought a Star Wars Lego set--until now...
Just today, I purchased and built the ARC-170 Starfighter, and let me tell you, this thing is cool. Even my younger sister, who really doesn't have more than a passing fascination with Star Wars, admitted that it was kind of cool (believe me, coming from her, that's saying something). I'm really out of practice with Legos, so it took me around 2 hours to get the nearly 400 piece set put together, but the results are amazing.
One thing that Lego seems to have done is to try to go beyond simply building sets, that is, the sets themselves, once completed, have all sorts of neat little gimmicks to them. The ARC Fighter is no different, as a pretty ingenious little set of cogs and wheels allow you to deploy the fighter's "attack foils." In addition, by pulling back on the same mechanism that controls the foils, you can release a pair of "proton bombs" from the underside of the fighter. I was amazed at the number of parts that must have been specifically designed for this set, as well as the inclusion of various mechanical pieces which I had only ever seen in Technics sets before.
At $39.98, it's a little pricey, but I think it was money well spent, as not only the fighter looks really good, but there are a lot of good little details on the three clone pilots and the astromech unit. My only complaint about the set is that only two of the three thingypit hatches are hinged. The one in the very front has to be pulled off in order to put the pilot in. I'm sure that if Lego had figured out a way to include a third hinge, they would have, but I really wish they had! Oh well...
If I get any more sets (I might get the Jedi Starfighter and Vulture Fighter set, but probably not the Clone Turbo Tank ) I'll post my 'reviews' here. Anyone else who has purchased any Episode III sets, feel free to do the same!
