A Jedi Question: WWWW?
(What Would Wookiees Wear?)
What would a generic Wookiee Jedi wear? This has been an interesting question tossed around a couple of forums I regularly visit. Some said that Wookiee Jedi would dress like all the other Jedi, others said they would dress in a Jedi fashion, but without the major components of the other Jedi, and still others said they would dress in a completely different fashion from regular Jedi. In those forums, everyone eventually agreed to disagree (oddly enough, there were no rage quits on the topic). However, it got me thinking.
Since Rebel Legion is considered the go-to source for Star Wars costuming, what are your opinions? I will present you with the same evidence of canon Star Wars characters that I presented to that forum and as you to decide what you think is appropriate garb for a Wookiee Jedi. So, let’s get started, shall we?
Oh, also, I am cross posting this in both the Jedi and Fringe: Chewbacca and Other Wookiee section since both sides have a tauntaun in this race.
Gungi was a male Wookiee Jedi Initiate serving the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars. He could not speak Basic, but was able to understand the language and communicate with others by speaking Shyriiwook. He appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and is considered T-canon (Television Canon--Level 2).
Gungi is seen wearing a brown leather or suede bandolier with gray edging and a decorative adornment midway between the shoulder and obi. Over the bandolier he wears a red or crimson wrapped obi. On top of the obi appears to be a thin (about 1½”) belt with an Original Trilogy style buckle. The only object on the belt is a covertec clip for his lightsaber. Finally, he wears a leather strap around his right bicep with a small “Wookiee box” strapped on it.
Kirlocca from The Living Force. He was a male Wookiee Jedi Master who served the Jedi Order as the Almas Academy's battlemaster in the years leading up to the Clone Wars. He appeared in Living Force and is considered C-canon (Continuity Canon--Level 3).
Kirlocca is depicted as wearing a Vest in the length of a normal Jedi outer tunic. He also wears a belt that is not clearly shown, but has a Wookiee pouch hanging from the right side. Finally, he wears leg wraps from just above the knee to the ankle.
Lowbacca (meaning "dutiful friend" in Shyriiwook) or "Lowie" was a Wookiee Jedi Knight during the Yuuzhan Vong War. He was the nephew of Chewbacca, the son of Kallabow and Mahraccor, and the brother of Sirrakuk. He studied at Luke Skywalker's Jedi Praxeum and was a companion of Jaina Solo, Jacen Solo and Tenel Ka. He wielded a bronze-bladed lightsaber. He appeared in Young Jedi Knights and elsewhere and is considered C-canon (Continuity Canon--Level 3).
Lowbacca is depicted and described as wearing only a utility belt. Even this is described differently, depending on when/where you see it. However, he is most always said to wear a translator droid on his belt.
Ruhr was a Wookiee Je'daii Temple Master serving the Je'daii Order on Tython at the height of the Infinite Empire's reign. He appeared in Dawn of the Jedi and is considered C-canon (Continuity Canon--Level 3).
Ruhr has yet to be fully depicted in the Dawn of the Jedi comics. However, from his/her only visual evidence, it would appear that he/she wears something akin to the Return of the Sith Wookiee warrior garb. However, as the above picture is the only evidence, it is inconclusive.
Tyvokka was a Wookiee Jedi Master who served the Galactic Republic during the Republic Classic era. A revered and respected member of the Jedi High Council, Tyvokka trained several Padawans, including the Kel Dor Plo Koon. He appeared in Star Wars: Republic and is considered C-canon (Continuity Canon--Level 3).
Tyvokka appears to be the most-dressed Wookiee Jedi in Star Wars. He is depicted as wearing a set of robes very similar to the Old Ben/Eeth Koth robes. An inner tunic, long outer tunic (ankle length), stole tabard (knee length), obi, full robe (with deep bell sleeves that have decorative designs on the cuff), and a utility belt. The only fully Wookiee thing about him is his Jedi belt. It does not have a buckle, but does have a series of “Wookiee boxes” all the way around it.
----------
So, with this, what do you believe a Generic Wookiee Jedi would wear? Remember, there is really no right or wrong answer.
