Hi, all! I'm Rome, aka "Crimson" on just about every other SW-related forum throughout the world*. I just recently got my Kai Justiss costume approved here (EU Jedi created by Joe Corroney and modeled by Justin Chung). I'd seen Kat's post about TJA being close to 400 members, so I figured I'd jump on board to help push that number closer!
I first heard about TJA many years ago when coordinating a St. Patrick's Day parade here in Detroit, and was chatting with Schph Gochi about participation.
I've been a member of the 501st since 2003, and just recently joined Rebel Legion (with my Kai outfit, obviously). I've served in many roles for the 501st over the years, from Squad Leader to the Legion's Captain of the Guard to a Detachment Leader, and so on. I think I was a regular trooper for only about the first 8 months of my membership I'm also currently serving as the Legion Webmaster for RL.
Kai Justiss is an EU Jedi, as I mentioned, with some non-traditional colors and components. After a Motor City Comic-Con here and a photo of Justin and me was posted after we'd compared notes about both of us being long-haired Asian guys, Joe made an off-hand comment about "would the real Kai Justiss please stand up?" And that got me to thinking.
There weren't enough Asian characters in the SW series for me to take a serious run at a face character until Joe mentioned Kai. Turns out that Kai had been illustrated a number of times (mostly by Joe, of course), but since he appeared in official SW publications and comics, that was the character I aimed for. I contacted both Joe & Justin to get the inside scoop on how the costume was built -- might as well go directly to the source since they're available!
A note about my Jedi name. I tried all the name generators that are out in the wild, and most of them came up with some pretty lame suggestions for me. I could see my own name in every one of them, and I just didn't like them. So when I stumbled across a suggestion that sounded vaguely Hawai`ian, I was hit by inspiration.
Honu'ula means "red turtle" in the Hawai`ian language. My favorite color is red (obviously, based on my forum name), and I'm particularly fond of the honu, or the green sea turtles often found around the Hawai`ian islands (and elsewhere in both Pacific and Atlantic oceans, but they actually have a distinct name in the Hawai`ian language).
Footnote
* I noticed that my profile has two other posts from 2004 attached to it. I'd like to point out that those weren't made by me. The writing style isn't mine; I use punctuation, and my sense of humor is much more subtle and less plain or clichéd. I would never end a sentence with "just kidding," and even if I did, I'd use proper punctuation.
So I suppose I'm here to reclaim the "Crimson" name, so to speak
