I had to go to a machine shop yesterday for work. They had a lot of motorcycle parts they made lying around and one part in particular caught my eye....shiny, tubular, about 10" long, 1" diameter....I asked if I could pick it up. "Sure." the owner said.
"This would make a great lightsaber." I said. He looked at me like I was from another planet, but his son chimed in, "Yeah, you're right, it kinda looks like a lightsaber." I wasn't sure what the part actually was for, but found out it was an oil cooler line for a motorcycle.
Out of curiosity I asked how much...I know parts like that are pricey. "Would you believe $375 for a pair?" the son said. Why yes, yes I would believe. We engaged in a brief conversation about how much it costs to set up a custom part, the CNC blueprints ,etc.
"You know....if you ever make a mistake on parts like this, I'd be interested in maybe buying some." I said. "Wait right herre." the son said, and disappeared into a back storage room. I heard him ruffling through boxes and he reappeared with another tube like I was holding. "Here." "What's wrong with this one?" I asked, because it looked perfectly good to me. Then I turned it on end and saw that it had a teeny tiny little ding on it where it had been dropped. "That," the son said, "And it isn't polished perfectly."
We got distracted by some talk about the work errandI was really there for. Before I left, I went to hand the tube back to them and said, "Just so I know, how much for something like that." The son shook his head and said, "Nothing. Take it away!"
I wasn't planning on building a saber....but now I kinda have no excuse since I stumbled upon something like this for free:

(I put the o-ring on it, to see what it would look like)
