I think they look awesome! I wish I was a girl - sometimes I think it would be easier to find boots in the more common places. I think I saw that design at Gottchalk's here in Victorville. I'm lucky I have short legs (and short everything else too...) tall boots can go over my knees they're so big. Mine are a little shorter than knee length I think but they look right on my legs...

you can were women's boots just go 1 to 2 sizes bigger. I were a size 9W in men's and a size 10 in women's. For costuming no one will care.

I don't remember seeing those in the JCP catalogue (since I work in the JCP catalogue dept.) and I am ALWAYS looking in the catalogue for parts for my costume! I'll have to look harder today. Were they onthe web or ina book? There are some things on the website tht aren't in books.
Or maybe I just skipped the girls' section cause I was thinking they wouldn't fit -- which they wouldn't if 14" calf is all it is.

Hello--I'm new around here, trying to get my outfit together. Almost done!
I really like those JC Penney boots; I just worry that they're too small in the shaft for my calves. But they're pretty. Looks like the suedey, strappy boot is going to be popular this year.
Anyway, in the interest of 'science' (ha!), I went out today and tried on several of these inexpensive strappy boots. I thought I'd share my findings in hopes it might help someone out. I have large calves myself, so perhaps my experiences might also be helpful in that regard.
First stop: Target Boots: fake suede with straps, in tan or black Price: $28 Result: not bad. Fit fine over my calves. Not very tall, though. Had zippers. Certainly inexpensive. The only thing I really didn't like was the soft, bunchy look. Still, in my decidedly non-expert opinion, I think these could work in a pinch. I might pick up a pair myself.
Next stop: Payless Boots: fake suede with straps, in black or tan Price: also $28 Result: I didn't like these quite as well. For one thing, they have a sort of logo stamped on them that's quite obvious. They also have zippers. Even looser and bunchier than the Target version. They were fairly comfortable. Still, the look was just too 'blousy' for me. Very similar to the Target boots in color and height, but that little logo thing kills them for me. Fit me fine though, even in the calf. Wedge heel with a sort of uptilted toe.
Then off to: Famous Footwear Boots: fake suede w/straps, in dark brown (brand name Hot Kiss) Price: a whopping $60 Result: I like the dark brown color quite a bit. Also, these did not have zippers! I was a bit skeptical but even without zippers, I got them over my calves fine. Again, a very blousy loose leather look. I did manage to pull and tuck the loose material for a sort of 'facelift', making them less bunchy looking, but for the price, why not purchase a more Jedi looking pair of boots? The color and lack of zippers are good, but the price is too high for these, I think. Maybe on major clearance!
Last stop: Kohl's Boots: again, fake suede w/straps, in tan (Candies) Price: $60 marked down to $52.49 Result: I liked these rather well, but again, I think the price is prohibitive. These were the tallest shaft of all the boots I tried today. Alas, they sported zippers, but even with the zippers I couldn't quite get them on all the way over my calves. The zippers were tan plastic and not too noticeable. These were much less blousy-looking, though the 'leather' was gathered around the zipper, so they are more wrinkled on the inside of the shaft. I rather liked these actually, as they seemed to have a better look, but they'd have to be marked down a lot more for me to get 'em.
I didn't make it to Penney's, I'm just too lazy to drag myself to the mall. UPSHOT: I might pick up the Target boots since they're pretty inexpensive, just to have something sort of Jedi-ish as a back up pair.
Looks like this style is going to be everywhere, so it might be a good idea to check other stores like Wal-Mart for other inexpensive variations. I guess for now I'll stick with my engineer boots I got from Zappos last year. Hope some of this helped someone out there!

They look very good. Now are they comfortable for you to walk and stand in? DOn't forget those insoles to help the feet not be achy.

Yes, good insoles are a must, for Cons and long events.
Don't skimp on these! Or you could be sorry.

What they said, I think mine were about $20 but I think I was the only person I knew at the end of CIII that wasn't complaining about my boots, in fact, the only part of me that didn't hurt was my feet. Get really good stong suppot insoles, you won't regret it.

Yes inserts are a must. My problem was, they were too thick so my feet were crunched up against the top of the boot and hurt even worse so I had to ditch them. Any ideas on good brands?

I put the insoles in the boots and had the shoemaker strech them on the top, across the instep, thet did the trick, I absolutly had to have those in there, I needed the arch support.

They look nice, it would help to see them with the rest of the outfit, but, they look fine there.

you can were women's boots just go 1 to 2 sizes bigger. I were a size 9W in men's and a size 10 in women's. For costuming no one will care. I would go two sizes.... I wear a 8 1/2 womens (sometimes a 9)...and in men's...I can always get by with a 6 1/2....especially in wider widths.... footwear can be a real pain in the... well... feet.... There is nothing worse than having your feet hurt...and I too had to dispense with the gell insoles in my current boots....they didn't have enough "height" in the toe with the insoles added....
