The current liquidation sale at denverfabrics.com got me thinking about what the appropriate weight is for a Jedi robe. For my personal preference fabric, 8 oz per square yard is about the maximum weight you would want to use. That weight fabric looks good, but any more than that would be a pretty heavy robe.
Anything labeled 'coat weight' would be too heavy and stiff. Basically, 'suit weight' seems to work best for a Jedi robe. Anything labeled 'dress' or 'blouse weight' would look too light and flimsy.
My person guess is that 5-7 oz/sq yard would work best for a lighter Jedi robe. Less than 4 oz/sq yard would look too thin.
Fabrics that have a nice weight: - wool crepe (used in TPM for Qui-Gon) - tropical weight wool - wool flannel - some blends of wool and other things

I used a linen-look blend... it is not as hot as wool, but has some weight to it... it looks a lot like Obi-Wan's in this picture.... from Ep II and not the heavy looking woolen he wears in ROTS... (Maybe it was winter in ROTS)

I just bought a medium weight 100% linen to make a 'summer' or 'hot weather' robe.

I've got a thin 'test' one, which I made from cotton, and an 'everyday' one I made made from a fleece fabric ... maybe it depends where you live? If you get cold winters, a nice fleecy Jedi cloak is lovely to snuggle into...however, if you live somewhere like Florida or Georgia...maybe not! ;D

My main outer robe is approx 12-14oz wool and its definately heavy. Great in a UK winter though lol.
