I haven't noticed that JoAnn's has fabric that's any better or worse than anywhere else, but the service at the one around here is really slow. Even if you are the only person waiting at the cash register, it takes them forever to ring up your stuff.

Jo-Anns is one of the reasons I buy most of my fabrics off the internet. Have swatch, will sew.
It's not so much that their stuff's not good, they tend to stock up on certain types of items. It doesn't seem like they consider that only people who care about clothing would buy fabric in the first place, so why carry the chintziest polyester blend available? At least carry some silks or wools in primary colors.
There was this one store where the staff would ask me what I was making. I'd describe the costume and receive a blank expression in response. They have no idea about their customer base which is why a lot of these chains are closing down locations or phasing out their fabric departments.

The staff is told to ask, "what are you making". They don't really care, usually. I normally just reply, "clothes". Sometimes I'll say, "costumes" If I can a second question and the person is really interested, I'll go into more detail.
JoAnn's focus is crafts...quilting, etc. I buy the cotton prints I use for street clothes there, when on sale. I buy notions there. Little else. When I need linen or raw silk, I buy on line.
Just received my order of 10 yards of dark brown cotton gauze from fabric.com. I'm stocking up for future need for fabric for undertunics as it's hard to find dark brown gauze.

Just found a place with a bolt of nice heavy brown wool, reasonable, I think it was 60 wide, good brown, dark, nice fairly heavy weight. was about $8.00 a yd.

Oooooh, that sounds very nice. $8 / yard is reasonable. Do you know how heavy it is?
For weight of fabric, I've found that I don't want anything more than suit weight. I have one that I know is about 8 oz/ sq. yd. and that's the maximum that I would be comfortable with.

This is a med wt coating, much heavier than suiting, a bit lighter than melton, not to much. It's a store in the NY garment district, I'll see if they have a website.

I think I found my dream bolt of wool today, and the store is going out of business, so a great price, a nubby wool boucle in dark brown, about 30 yards of it, I have a guy who wants a couple of wool robes, and there should be enough for 1 for me too.

The wool boucle sounds like an interesting texture, but usually I see it multi-colored. Was it solid brown?
I think I want to try wool crepe now. mooglar did a pretty good Qui-Gon costume for CIV and his robe was wool crepe. Yeah, they used wool crepe in the movie, but I still wanted to see it and touch it before buying some online. Crepe just doesn't sound substantial. And I'm going to do something....interesting..... with the dark brown robe I have, so I'll want to replace it anyway.

solid dark chocolate, a bit nubby, washed and dryed it, and it got even softer, the drape is incredible! Turned out to bw 20 yards, so enough for me and the guy who wants the other one. And maybe a medieval tunic as well.

Nova, was it a chain store where you found it? Perhaps others can pick up some for themselves

Fashion Fabrics Club is having a wool sale. $7.95/yd for most, including wool crepe, wool flannel and tropical weight wool. www.fashionfabricsclub.com They have a decent selection of solid brown, heather, taupe, tan. Good opportunity for making a lighter weight robe.
