Does the 98% wool and 2% lycra fabric have any stretch to it? You really don't want any stretch in the fabric of a robe; it's so big it will stretch out of shape over time and sag in odd ways. Wool and a non-stretch polyester mix would be better.

I checked the small piece of fabric I have & it doesn't seem to stretch hardly at all. I wish I could find what you recommend but unfortunately there is none of that kind of material here in Joliet, Orland Park, fabricsclub.com or denverfabrics.com either. I would like to stay with the chocolate brown--I really like it. I'm going to wash the piece I have in warm water & see what happens. Unless somebody has someplace else for me to look for it I'm open to suggestions. All the help I'm receiving is great. Thanks

If there's no stretch, then the fabric should be fine. Yes, try it in water and see what happens. One handy way of testing it out is to pin it to an old shirt or something with safety pins and put it in the wash and see how it looks. If you're worried about shrinkage then lay it down on a big piece of paper and draw the outline of it. After it's washed and dried, lay it down on the outline and see if it's any smaller.

Thank you that's a good idea. I felt the material & it stretches ever so slightly in 1 direction & nothing the other direction. So my thinking is that it would be cut the length of the non stretch way if there is enough of it. I'm not sure which way the fabric will be folded & I think I might need about 8 yds. I'm 5'2" & I don't plan having it drag on the ground--probably about 1 to 2" above the ground with boots on. Does that sound about right? I'm also going to have shoulder seams in it similar to a tunic. This would be summer/travel robe. I've got some wool which I plan to do a robe with no seam shoulders.

Janqui, go with the grain of the fabric, that is the direction that is paralel to the selvage, lycra is not always a stretch fabric, though it usually is, that's a weird blend. How heavy is it?

I wouldn't decided on final length until you have it ready to hem. Try it with a length so it touches the floor with boots on. You can always cut it a little shorter if you don't like the look.
In the movies, Qui-Gon's robe is a little bit above the ground. Obi-Wan's robe just touches the ground and Mace's looks like it drags.

Best shot of Mace's robe hem is just before the Arena battle starts, as he's walking in, shot from the knee down. I like that hem, practical, shorter in front, longer in back

Thank you. I did wash & dry the fabric--tropical wool with lycra & I didn't like what it did in the dryer. So I'm back to looking for a light wgt fabric thats chocolate brown & washable.

Wool, best to wash cold and lay flat to dry, or in a very cool air dryer.

I did locate a light wgt cotton/polyester blend material in chocolate brown, washed/dried it in the dryer & it seems like the material has turned out beautifully. I'm going to attempt doing the robe with it. This robe will probably have shoulder seems to make it easier for me to make, I hope.

I like a nice heavy weight double brushed cotton flannel, drapes well and washes easy too, and gets a slight wooly look w/o being to warm.

the perfect robe fabric : img349.imageshack.us/img349/5906/img1694smalldv2.jpgimg422.imageshack.us/img422/2563/img1700smallwq3.jpgI found it at fabricland. its ~90% wool , 10% viscose (whatever that is). price before discounts was $17/meter (canadian). your mileage may vary. -=========- note: the macro shot is decieving. the fabric isn't really all that thick. 2 layers would measure ~1mm.. so each layer of fabric in that pic is only 1/2 mm thick. it looks a LOT thicker in the picture (its an extreme closeup to show the texture of the stuff)

That...
especially that first picture...
is beautiful!
That's a bit less than the going rate for the good wool locally here (~$29US). I was able to find a bolt of decent 100% wool in a similar variegated brown for $10US/yd, but the drape may not be quite as nice as that in the picture. Very nice find!
