I'm not sure if this is the exact right place for this post, but since it pertains to robe material I thought it was likely acceptable. If anyone is planning on making a new robe www.Fabric.com has cocoa brown Gabardine Wool on sale at $6.71/yard until Nov 14, they have 66 yards left as of this post. I purchased 4 yards of it for my first robe, I'm going to pick up some $1/yard fabric at Walmart for a test robe before I cut into the wool since I'm making my own pattern based off my observations of the construction of the robes in the movies - seams up the side and under the arms and seam up the middle of the back. I think that's how OuterRobes makes their robes, but they use flannel for their robes and I dont want to be the pill Jedi or static-cling Jedi heh. I'm not sure if the gabardine wool is actually darker than shown in the picture or if that is the actual color, I'm guessing it may be likely that the lighting used to take the photo may have been bright to show detail and made it look lighter than it is. But if it isn't I'm not worried about it since not all robes were exactly the same and I'm not trying to replicate any specific Jedi. Fabric.com also has Melton wool in 2 brown colors, one is cinnamon stick and the other is cocoa brown. Mystikmerchants uses a cocoa brown melton that they say is a great match for Obi-wan's robes. Both sell for $10.95/yard and have around 30yards left in stock of either.

I don't know how you're going to make your robe, or how tall you are, but with 4 yards of the fabric, you might not have ennough.
It took me 8.5 yards of fabric to make mine... I think it is pretty standard for jedi robes.

I think it is pretty standard for jedi robes. I usually buy nine yards, but I can get away with 8, depending on the width of the bolt. "Fabric.com also has Melton wool in 2 brown colors, one is cinnamon stick and the other is cocoa brown."I ordered the cocoa brown, but I think they sent me the cinnamon stick by mistake. I'm waiting for swatches to confirm it. If it's wrong, I'll exchange it. The cinnamon stick is too yellowish, and too light for an Obi-Wan colored robe. It would do fine if you're not trying to go for that color though... it's a nice medium brown. I'll let you know how it turns out...

Heh yeah I'm going to need more. In calculating my measurements for length and width (plus extra for adjustments) and doubling those for one side of the robe and adding the hood measurements, I forgot about the OTHER side of the robe. But that's easily remedied.

While phoenix textiles is my very favorite place for on-line fabrics, gabardine is not my fav wool for a robe. I have a robe made of 100% wool gab and it has a hard finish. I'll be replacing it with a wool flannel that has a nice, "wooly" texture. Got that at Denver fabrics I'm barely 5'2" and I need 9 yards for my robe. I do not do set in sleeves, so it takes more yardage. My hood alone takes 2 yards, as I self line it. Personally, I think the color is a little light for a robe www.fabric.com/apparel-fashion-fabric-wool-fabric-wool-gabardine-wool-gabardine-cocoa-brown.aspx The good thing about Phoenix is you can return it if you don't like it.

I bought some melton wool from fabric.com I think I've got the cocoa brown & I've deep dark brown. I'm planning on making a robe without shoulder tucks & no shoulder seam but still haven't decided which one I'm going to use. I'm open to suggestions. I'm going to make a cheap muslin version 1st & I haven't had the time yet to make a muslin pattern of the robe. I have it cut out but not put together. The dark brown is darker then the dark brown used by mystic merchants.

BUT--- it's actually a warmer brown than the cocoa. The cinnamon has some yellow in it, and the cocoa has blue hues. I decided to keep the cinnamon.
