I was poking around on ebay and came across 12 yards of brown, melton wool for about $16 a yard. (apparently you don't have to buy the whole 12 yards, just however many you want)
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=28161&item=8192021622&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V
The problem is, it's 1 1/2 pounds per yard. And I live in the quasi-tropics. I'd love to have a close look at this material, but common sense says it's too heavy for me, but it looks like a decent price and a perfect Jedi robe color, too.

YES, it's too heavy. I made a street-wear modified Jedi robe out of wool melton. It's great for Seattle's cold, rainy winters. But it weighs a lot.

subtle wave of hand, "this is not the wool you're looking for" I use it for most of my SCA winter garb. Hey, even NC gets very cold and wet in the winter. But you're right, I wouldn''t want it for warmer weather or climes.

Aaaah, perhaps we need to start a thread or a tutorial on materials and things that did NOT work for Jedit costuming.
That melton wool has some odd bit of nostalgia for me. When I was a kid we had an "army" blanket that I liked. It was green, but it must have been made from the same kind of wool.

looks like some great stuff...but yes....too warm... I have a really lightweight wool and still rarely even wear my robe....

I bought 8yd of the melton brown wool that is on eBay. I sent it all back to the vendor. The color was way to dark. The eBay photo does not match at all. The flash makes it look like a very close match to Obi Wan's robe but in fact it is closer to an Anakin brown. So be careful if you go that route and ask her to send you samples. They are a buck a piece. I barely was able to convience her to take it back.

Melton wool.... that just sounds hot!
You're lucky she took it back. Gotta love ebay!

fabric.com also has melton wool for about $10.95. They have as a special & they said when it's gone they wouldn't know how soon they'd get it back. I got the cocoa brown because they said the dark brown looks almost black. I have a cotton robe but I wanted a warmer robe because I live near Chicago.

It WILL be warmer but it will be quite heavy. I made a mundane coat in the style of a modified Jedi robe (smaller hood and sleeves, shorter hem) out of wool melton. It is very heavy....heavier than I would want my Jedi robe to be but it is an excellent winter coat!
