A lot depends on how wide the fabric is. I've seen a lot of 60" wide wool. But if it's only 45" wide you'll need more. I'm 5"3' and 125 lbs and can get away with 4-5 yards of the wider fabric for a robe. You could need twice as much. You should allow for lots of pleats, front and back. The robe should fit comfortably wrapped all the way around you or it won't hang right. The hood alone could take 2-3 yards of fabric. Jedi hoods are ridiculously huge and impractical. You can see how big they are by how far they hang down their backs.
Are you sewing a robe yourself? You can try laying out a pattern for the pieces in newsprint to see how much fabric you'll need.

Depends on how much flow & what typeof fabric you want to use. Where do you live? What's your climate like?

Wool melton is probably too heavy. I found the perfect wool... www.denverfabric.comThey have 4 shades of brown, it is 80% wool, 20% nylon wool flannel at $8.95/yd I'll be using it to make a new robe AFTER I see the FIDM exibit, hoping to get a close up look at the real robe(s).

Kai, can you let me know what you find out? I'm curious. ditto..... I am curious about what you find out also... I am always torn in this area....I have a robe that I like....but it is a lightweight 100% wool.....and I rarely ever wear that one.... BUT ...I would still like a canon Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon robe.... why.... I have no idea....I don't wear the one I have....

I know what you mean, but I would wear it as a winter coat so I'd wear it. I find even the heavy cotton to warm most of the time, but I do love the look of the robe.

Yes, I'll let everyone know what I find out. There will have been lots of people posting on the various costume forums before I get there though, as I'm going in November. And all the photos I take will be posted on my host.

I always seem to wear my robe with my costume. For regular room temperatures it feels fine. I used the absolute minimum of fabric for it and I wonder if that isn't why? Outside temperatures were in the upper 50's and low 60's for most of Worldcon and I wore it for the whole con. I'm going to try one with as many pleats as I see in Obi-Wan's robe and see if that makes some difference.

Very nice; thanks for the tip! Yeah, I plan on making a robe out of it......AFTER I get the Dressing the Galaxy book. Going to the FIDM exhibit is just a little bit far for me.

What are the start-finish dates of FIDM? Who knows, I could hit a jackpot somewhere, or just get some extra costuming orders. Flights are generally cheap late in the year.

Oooh boy. That's a great sale.:-) Wool Melton is the same fabric The Madseamstress uses for her overrobes. I wish I had some extra cash I'd grab some.
