I didn't get many nibbles on the general forum, so I thought I should repost this question here. Besides, this is the only answer that really counts.
From the Jedi Assembly Costuming Standards
I've looked at a bunch of pictures of Jedi and there seems to be a lot of variation in the undertunics. Of course there is the "standard" undertunic, which crosses over like the outer tunic, but I've also seen boat necked tunics, tunics with collars, and even one or two turtlenecks.
For Halloween this year, I used a brown mock turtleneck shirt as my undertunic. Would that be acceptable for an Assembly approved costume? Or do I need to send a picture so you can see how it looks?
Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your time. Rebel Scum I would think so, since it's what Old Ben looked like he was wearing.

We always need a good photo for membership. If the turtleneck is brown, it would likely be acceptable. As stated by Solinbeb, it is similar to Old Obi-Wan's undertunic.

Right. Appearance is really what counts. What we are trying to avoid here is a jedi tunic with a common white or black undershirt sticking out of it. That totally throws off the look of the ensemble.

I think that turtlenecks will be acceptable, and we are currently discussing it . We'll let you know as soon as we decide...or you can check the Jedi Code in a few weeks, when we should be done with our bi-annual update!

If we aim for prequel Jedi costuming, I don't think that the turtleneck should be allowed. Standard PT jedi have 2 tunics... the turtleneck is more recognized for the anakin & Obi Wan of the older trilogy, but it should go with a properly designed belt as well...
Now, the idea is to know if TJA is a prequel jedi costuming association, or a Jedi costuming association.... it could imply KOTOR and other era as well, so I leave it to the council to clear all that up, but I tough it would be wise to point out that the turtleneck is better to represent ep 4-5-6 then the prequel that we mainly base our costumes on.

I can answer that. We are not strictly a prequel Jedi costuming group. We are a Jedi costuming group based primarily on all 6 movies and we do accept certain EU Jedi costumes as well. That was decided long ago. We are updating the code at the moment. Maybe we should say something to that effect since people seem to get confused on it. It is in our code that we accept variations of brown and tan movie Jedi costumes. Ben's costume is a brown and tan Jedi costume which the prequel Jedi were based off of. So it would be ok to accept turtlenecks in brown and tan following that rule. However, technically Ben doesn't wear a turtle neck. But, it looks fine when people do wear turtle necks and we do make some exceptions for memebrship. For example, we accept black boots and belts since people have trouble finding boots to begin with. We may include turtle necks as fine for memebrship, but state that for LFL cannon events, they may not be acceptable. Still discussing..........

You beat me to the punch Xana. If TJA is only a prequel costuming group, then Luke's ROTJ black costume wouldn't be acceptable. Getting back to the turtlenecks, Old Ben isn't the only Jedi to wear this style of undertunic. Take a look a this picture of Agen Kolar - www.padawansguide.com/others/kolar-tiin-fisto.jpgAs I said in my original post, there seems to be enough variation in the undertunics to allow some flexibility on the part of the Assembly members.

I just have to note that Saesee Tiin's undertunic/shirt is different from the typical wrap-style undertunic as seen in the Padawan's Guide photo. It is just a straight across the chest undershirt. But one thing about it -- it is NOT a recognizable terrestial type collar. It actually doesn't have a collar at all, just a straight edge across the chest. You would still have to make a special shirt for that and if you went to all that trouble, you might as well make the more recognizable version of the undertunic.
Turtlenecks are recognizable as being worn in the movies, but may not be very practical since a turtleneck shirt under your costume could be a little warm.

I agree that a turtleneck is not designed for summer wear, but it gets pretty chilly around here (Maryland) in late October, so it makes an excellent layer for a Halloween costume.

Alot of people do get the impression that we're a prequel costuming group... it's been mentioned several times by different people. I can see why, though... most of the costumes are prequel. We have a few Lukes but none that I know of that post on the boards much... except Tanthos, who has a Luke RotJ costume.
