Chapter One
“There’s no sign of him anywhere,” Boba Fett said.
“Well, find him!” Darth Vader replied.
“Yes sir,” Boba Fett replied, “I will find him.”
Darth Vader left the room. He had hired twenty bounty hunters to track down Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Boba Fett was among the youngest and most inexperienced of all of them. But he wasn’t doing any worse then the others. They were all doing poorly. It had been a year, and none of them had found any trace of Obi-Wan.
The clones had failed to hunt down Obi-Wan during Order 66. Obi-Wan was still alive. Darth Vader was sure of that, as he paused for a moment and looked out a window at the vastness of space. There were so many planets where Obi-Wan could be hiding. Darth Vader would find him. Vader would find him and destroy him.
Chapter Two
The Death Star was nearly complete. Aboard the great battlestation, Darth Vader walked to his personal shuttle, escorted by a dozen stormtroopers. Waiting outside the shuttle was Grand Moff Tarkin.
“Sir!” Tarkin said as Vader approached, “We’ve decoded the rebel transmission that was intercepted by Star Destroyer Chimaera in the Dantooine system. According to the message, the rebels have just completed construction of a secret base on the planet Mustafar. I’ve never heard of such a place. Do you know where it is, sir?”
Mustafar. Darth Vader was very familiar with that place. Too familiar.
“Yes,” Vader replied, “Prepare my personal Star Destroyer. We must destroy this rebel base at once.”
Chapter Three
On the desert planet of Tatooine, thirteen year old Luke Skywalker wandered across the desolate sand dunes to the homestead of Ben Kenobi. The door was open, and Luke snuck inside. But Ben Kenobi was nowhere to be found.
Ben had told Luke about swords with blades made of light. Luke looked around Kenobi’s house, hoping to find Kenobi’s lightsaber. He wasn’t going to steal it, he just wanted to turn it on and see the blade of shimmering light.
A shadow fell across the room.
Luke spun around and saw Uncle Owen standing in the doorway.
“Luke!” Owen exclaimed, “I’ve been looking all over for you! What do you think you’re doing? I told you I don’t want you going anywhere near Ben’s house! Now get back home this instant!”
“I’m sorry uncle,” Luke muttered as he headed for the door.
Luke never found out where Ben Kenobi had gone that day. He didn’t know that Ben Kenobi was really Obi-Wan Kenobi, and he didn’t know that Obi-Wan had left Tatooine to help the rebels establish a base on Mustafar.
It would be years before Luke Skywalker ever saw a lightsaber.
Chapter Four
Obi-Wan looked out at the sea of molten lava. Mustafar. The entire planet was one giant volcano. The rebel base towered atop a cliff, high over an ocean of lava.
Obi-Wan hated this place. He wanted to get back to Tatooine. His fighting days were over. He wanted to get back to Tatooine. He had to watch over Luke, and make sure he was alright. And when the time was right, Obi-Wan would train Luke in the ways of the Jedi. But the time never seemed right.
A month ago on Tatooine, Obi-Wan was getting tired of living as an old hermit. He couldn’t stand helplessly by as the evil Galactic Empire conquered the galaxy. He was still a Jedi.
Building a rebel base on Mustafar was Obi-Wan’s idea. It was the perfect location, since so few people had ever heard of the planet. But now that construction was complete, Obi-Wan was ready to head back to Tatooine. He headed for his X-Wing when a rebel soldier ran towards him.
“Obi-Wan sir!” the soldier yelled, “There’s an Imperial Star Destroyer in orbit above the planet!”
The rebels were not prepared for this. Not yet. An Imperial Star Destroyer was a spacecraft so large and so powerful, that it could destroy the entire base with a few turbolaser shots.
Chapter Five
“Turbolasers are ready sir,” an Imperial commander said.
“No,” Darth Vader replied, “Send a squadron of TIE Fighters to destroy the gun turrets. Then prepare my shuttle. There’s a presence down there, a presence I’ve not felt in a very long time.”
TIE Fighters screamed through the atmosphere, firing blaster shots at the base. Rebel X-Wing starfighters took off to engage the TIEs in aerial combat, but they were greatly outnumbered.
The air filled with blaster fire as the rebel gun turrets shot at the TIE Fighters. But the TIE Fighters blasted the gun turrets apart, one by one.
Darth Vader’s shuttle descended to Mustafar.
Chapter Six
A circle of rebel soldiers surrounded the shuttle as it touched down at the base. As the door opened and the ramp extended to the ground, the soldiers fired. Darth Vader leapt out of the shuttle, blocking the laser blasts with his red lightsaber. Vader charged at the rebels, cutting them down with his lightsaber. A dozen stormtroopers ran out of the shuttle, firing at the rebel soldiers. Within a minute, all the rebel soldiers were dead.
The stormtroopers stayed guarded the shuttle as Darth Vader walked through the base. Everything was quiet, too quiet. As Darth Vader walked down the large corridor, the sound of TIE Fighters soaring overhead echoed through the base.
Obi-Wan stood alone in the center of the base’s command center. It was a large circular room with walls made of glass. Obi-Wan could hear the ominous footsteps of Darth Vader getting louder and louder. Darth Vader was so close that Obi-Wan could hear him breathing. Obi-Wan looked around frantically, and there he was. Darth Vader had entered the command center.
Vader spoke, “When I left you I was the apprentice. Now, I am the master.”
“You are still an apprentice,” Obi-Wan replied, “An apprentice to Darth Sidious.”
Darth Vader turned on his lightsaber. “This is the end for you, Obi-Wan Kenobi,” he said.
Obi-Wan turned on two blue lightsabers – his own, and Anakin Skywalker’s.
They stared at each other for a moment, and then as Obi-Wan raised his lightsabers into a defensive position, Darth Vader attacked.
The battle had begun.
Chapter Seven
They could not fight at quite the same speed as they did the first time they were on Mustafar, but both Obi-Wan and Darth Vader put all their strength and effort into the fight.
This time, however, it was not blue against blue. This time, Darth Vader’s red lightsaber blended with the deadly lava in the background. It was blue against red. Jedi against Sith. Good against evil.
The duel seemed to go on forever. They were too evenly matched. In the background, through the giant glass windows, hot lava spewed into the air, and starfighters battled in the skies.
And suddenly, in a swift and skilled motion, Obi-Wan Kenobi cut off Darth Vader’s right hand.
Vader collapsed to his knees as his lightsaber fell to the ground and rolled across the floor.
Obi-Wan held his two lightsabers at Darth Vader’s throat.
Chapter Eight
Killing Darth Vader was not the Jedi way. But there seemed to be no other way.
Obi-Wan wondered if he should kill Vader, if he could kill the one who was his apprentice, who was the Chosen One. Darth Vader could still be the Chosen One. There was still good in him.
And suddenly there was a chaotic roar of sound as a starship crashed through the glass and into the room. Obi-Wan jumped backwards as the room filled with glass.
It was the Slave I, Boba Fett’s own starship. A gun turret on the ship aimed at Obi-Wan Kenobi and opened fire.
Obi-Wan did his best to block the laser blasts with his lightsaber as he ran for cover. Darth Vader dove for his lightsaber, grabbing it with his left hand.
A ramp descended from the Slave I and Darth Vader darted into the ship. The ship pulled back and flew away.
Darth Vader had escaped.
Obi-Wan turned off his lightsabers. He picked up the hand of Darth Vader. It was not a real hand; he had lost his real hand to Count Dooku long ago. Underneath the black glove was Vader’s robotic hand, made of gold.
Darth Vader was more machine than man.
Chapter Nine
“I finally got some rebel prisoners to talk,” Boba Fett explained, “They told me Obi-Wan was here. I got here and saw you might need a little help, so I did what I could.”
“I had everything perfectly under control,” Darth Vader replied, “Dock this ship with the Star Destroyer at once. Once the turbolaser bombardment begins, the rebel base will be completely destroyed within seconds. Obi-Wan will never survive. At last, he is no more.”
The Slave I docked with the Star Destroyer, and Darth Vader ordered the turbolasers to fire. Massive laser blasts rained down on the base, blasting it to pieces. The base collapsed and fell off the cliff towards the fiery lava below.
Chapter Ten
Obi-Wan was running towards the hanger bay as the turbolasers opened fire. He jumped into an X-Wing starfighter, and as the flaming base began to fall into the lava, he started the engine and flew off into space.
Obi-Wan’s could not defeat Darth Vader. He would return to Tatooine now.
He was more determined then ever before to teach Luke Skywalker the ways of the Jedi.
