Something that's been bugging me since I first saw ROTS. Anakin claims that you have to be a Jedi Master to be on the Council... Ki-Adi Mundi has never taken a padawan learner, so is really only a Jedi Knight, yet he is on the Council, as are the two Jedi (not Kit Fisto) that accompany Master Windu to arrest Palpatine. This then leads to a double edged question. Are there two kinds of Jedi Master? One who has successfully trained a padawan to Knighthood and earned the rank of Master (like Qui-Gon had) or a second kind who is simply addressed as Master, because they are on the council (like Ki-Adi Mundi) If this is the case, is this why when Anakin goes into the Council chamber, the youngling calls him Master Skywalker? Either way, by being on the Council Anakin should have been called Master, even if he wasn't given the Rank of Master, he would have gained the Title of Master, so what was he getting so worked up about?

In ROTS ObiWan was on the council hence the "master" title. And I don't think if you train a padawan you are given a master title.

There are Jedi Masters, those on the council and those elevated to that level by the council. The Term "Master Jedi" It is the respect given to a Jedi Knight, As you would give a man of the cloth, like Reverend, Rabbi, Father, or a English Knight Sir. A padawan would always address a teacher as "Master". I hope that makes sense.

Mon-Jas is right. The title is earned when a Knight successfully trains a padawan and that padawan becomes a knight. It is also granted to Jedi Knights who are appointed to the council. Anakin was not granted the title but a padawan would address his/her elders as Master out of respect.

That's what I was thinking. Plo-Koon, Obi-Wan was addressed as 'Master Kenobi' in ATOC because he was acting as a teacher, so it was more the 'respect' form of the title, but in the Clone Wars, he was not only elevated to the Council, but Anakin was made a Knight, so he did earn the rank of Master as well. The thing I am still confused about is why Anakin was getting so worked up, because there were already members of the Council who were only Knights, not 'Ranking' Masters, and he still would have been called Master because he was on the Council.
If the youngling called him Master Skywalker purely because he was on the Council, then surely he was a Master (even if not a 'Ranking' Master)? (In all fairness, I would say Anakin had the skill and power of a Jedi Master, just not the wisdom of one)

shall we turn to Obi-Wan's title as "General" Kenobi?

I thought of that as well. And like you all that is a respect thing. I take taekwondo for instance and we have some red belts and soon to test for their black belt. Out of respect we call them Sir or Maa'm and even master.
And how the heck did he get the title General? Im still confused on that.

The book explained why Anakin was so desperate for the Master rank... it was far more than simply an insult to not be one.
Obi Wan gained the General title because the clone army was put under the leadership of the Jedi; they automatically became combat generals.

but ONLY Kenobi is addressed by the title :General" to my recollection. Yoda and Mace are still called "Master".

In the Clone Wars Cartoon, Master Windu was also refered to as 'General'. I have to admit, Lucas does have something of a fixation for the rank, virtually everyone gets made a general at some point... ;D
Leda, I believe Anakin was refered to as Commander Skywalker by a few people.

TO my understanding Anakin wanted the rank of master so he could get into the archieves that he couldn't attain as a Knight. He thought that by being given the Master rank he would have been able to have acess to the restriced information in hope he could have found something in there to help him save pademe.

Yes, from reading the books, I found that out too. The thing that doesn't quite add up though, is no one gave Luke the rank of Jedi Master, he just took it upon himself, and was still able to use the holocrons. Even if the Council had granted Anakin the rank of Master, it wouldn't've surprized me if the holocrons hadn't worked because of his lack of personal mastery, despite his Force abilities...

Well even Luke coudn't acess all from thr holocrons.. only when he was ready it would let him have that acess. So I agree Anakin robably woulddn't had been able to acess them.
