well... from his story, he wasnt the master, he was the apprentice... until he killed his master in his sleep. It's kind of funny if you read that, it can have 2 points of view, the apprentice killed his master while his master slept or.... the apprentice killed his master while he was sleeping, killer sleepwalker

I also read an article in an entertainment mag that interviewed Ian McDiarmid and when that was brought up, he said: "...well I certainly played it that way." Also I really like that theory Ki Vaan... The Jedi are the keepers of the Force both Light and Dark. The Sith are anomalies that come along occasionally and disrupt the Force (as they wish the universe to be in chaos by hording all the Force power and attempting to eliminate the Light side, causing an imbalance of the Forces- thus the term "great disturbance in the Force").
Therefore in order for there to be balance (harmony between the Light and Dark sides) the Sith must be eliminated.
I never thought of it that way.

Thanks Leda- I can't take full credit as I am paraphrasing from a discussion over on the Aliens Legacy board.
It does seem to fit nicely though- If you think about, by the time of Episode V, the Sith are in charge. Obi-Wan is dead, and Yoda is unheard of.
When Luke Skywalker appears, it is the Emperor who proclaims there is a great disturbance in the Force. Now the good Light Side represents the anomaly that has the potential to destroy the Sith's domination of the Force and their evil (chaotic) way of life.
It is a wonderful role-reversal.

There was a guy in white Vader armor at CIII, I believe. It was...interesting, to say the least.

First, it was Anakin who would bring balance, not Luke. Luke just believed in his father enough to know there was good in him. Anakin did bring balance, first allowing the Sith to be in power, then about 22 years later to bring the balance back to lightside. That's a simple thing to figure out. On Palpatine and Anakin I figured he was his father somehow. Shmi wasn't on Tatooine and gave birth there, Anakin said that they came there when he was already born. I always felt that a strong woman like Shmi had a reason to go to a planet like tatooine, when most wouldn't. Maybe she had a reason to go with her son there? makes for intersting thought on why. JMD

I'm sure there is a connection to what Palpatine was saying about his master being able to create life, however a direct connection between Shmi and Palpatine is a bit of a stretch for me. If Palpatine had a plan to use the Dark Side of the Force to create life, for the eventual purpose of having a powerful apprentice, why would he allow the mother to escape? I say allow, because Palpatine (Sidious) is too powerful and intelligent for Shmi to escape on her own. I read a review that I agree with a lot- If Palpatine were to create life, he would hold the mother in captivity until she gave birth, and then kill her immediately afterward. Then raise the child with nannies and kill any of them who might ask too many question or help the boy to escape. But allow the mother to escape with the child? I don't think so. My thought is this: I believe that Palpatine's master created Anakin, but had no real knowledge of his actions- Darth Plagus (sp?) was trying to create life, and somewhere in the universe Shmi became pregnant. Unaware of this, Plagus believes that his experiment was a failure. Palpatine kills Plagus before learning the power to create life (and he openly admitted to Anakin that he did not have the knowledge to cheat death, after Mace was killed). 9 years pass and by sheer luck (or the "will of the Force") Palpatine discovers that his former master's experiment was indeed a success, and that Anakin is in the hands of the Jedi. So Palpatine bides his time, carefully manipulating events so that he can watch Anakin closely until the time is right to turn him to the Dark Side. It gives Palpatine's line at the end of TPM, "And you young Skywalker; we will watch your career with great interest." a whole new meaning. Ironically the Jedi saved Palpatine a lot of work- Palpatine wouldn't have to teach Anakin the ways of the Force (whether it be Light or Dark) as the Jedi did that for him.

I stood in line at Clll (who didn't)with a gentleman that said Lucas filmed a scene where Palpatine tells Anakin that he had manipulated the Midichlorians and impregnated his mother. Thereby telling Anakin that he is Anakins father. Supposedly George decided this bore to close of a resemblance to E.S.B. and decided to delete the scene.
