I think old Obi-Wan did forgive the Anakin. He said with real fondness about Luke's father being his friend. Of course, we know that at the time, that was just because Lucas hadn't given out the real backstory on him, but within the context of the story Obi-Wan thought of young Anakin as a good friend. He couldn't quite go all the way and forgive Darth Vader for what he did, but he got there with Anakin.

You're missing the point entirely. It is not about whether or not he was capable of destroying Sidious. In Anakin's mind Padme is going to die. Padme means everything to him- he has already lost his mother and he swore he would not allow anyone else he holds dearest to him to die.
So Anakin is convinced by Sidious (Palpatine) that there is a power to prevent the ones we love from dying. As far as joining Palpatine and the Dark side- it is a means to an end for Anakin- to save Padme's life.
This is the entire reason he came to Palpatine's aid when Mace was about to take Palpatine's head off. Not to save Palpatine's life, but to protect the only person who has the knowledge to save Padme. In Anakin's mind, Mace wasn't killing Palpatine, Mace was killing the ability to save Padme- Anakin couldn't allow that to happen. That was his choice- to save the only person he loved regardless of the cost involved.
It is almost as if Anakin was being held hostage by Palpatine- (If I die, Padme dies).
Now about the Force choke. Unfortunately the pacing of the film is very fast. It would appear that Anakin was (very quickly) becoming the aggressor in an abusive relationship.
You have to understand that by the end of the film Anakin trusts absolutely no one, not even the Emperor (whom he says he can defeat with Padme's help).
Padme is the only person left who Anakin trusts. He has destroyed everything- turned the universe upsidedown- allowed evil to take over and has become evil himself all for the sake of protecting her.
When Obi-Wan appears on Padme's ship Anakin believes that she has betrayed him. Anakin thinks that Padme brought Obi-Wan to Mustafar to kill him. So in a moment of uncontrolled anger, he Force chokes her. He has allowed his temper to get the best of him and hurt the one person who he loves most. It is truly tragic.
To me this film puts Darth Vader in a whole new light- In the Original Trilogy, Vader is evil pure and simple. Now Vader is a tragic character. It makes Anakin's redemption in ROTJ a thousand times more powerful.

Because he has embraced the Dark Side and he still wants to rule the universe.
If Anakin had won the fight between him and Obi-Wan (or at least had a tie), Anakin would have grown in power and eventually destroyed the Emperor.
But because he now has artificial limbs he will not be able to cast Force lightning (which seems to be the most powerful Force ability). So Anakin accepts that he will have to settle for being the number two guy in the galaxy.

Also I think -- and this is purely my own opinion -- Anakin does not want to overthrow the Emperor... yet anyways. He likes having someone eddifying him. He likes having someone always telling him how wonderful he is, how great he is. It's great to be the best friend of the most powerful being in the universe, but it may not be so much fun BEING the most powerful being in the universe.

No, I think Anakin really does want to overthrow Sidious so he can make the whole universe right. If he hadn't gotten fried, I think he would have tried, probably before he was ready. The Emperor puzzles me; he was absolutely certain that Anakin would become more powerful than he was; so what was his plan for that? Just get killed?
Anakin's anger at Obi-Wan went far beyond revenge. He dumped every frustration, every fear, every hate, pinned all of his own faults onto Obi-Wan. It didn't work.

Power Corrupts the Powerful....plain and simple. There is no peace with Darth Vader. hell a used car sales man is more convincing than Vader on his tyrade... IMO

Anakin did want to overthrow the Emperor, if play the ROTS game and play mission 17, it shows an alternate ending in which Anakin does overthrow him and claim that the galaxy is his.
